The Aostar wtr pro for only $50 more, has a ryzen 5825 processor (Zen 3 vs Zen+) with 8 cores vs 4 cores. A better iGPU and dual 2.5gbps Ethernet vs only one 2.5gbps. The CPU alone seems like the extra $50 is worth it. And that's just Amazon pricing. Nothing amazing.

These literally just are tiny pcs that just happen to have 4 3.5" bays. They can run any OS and thus docker containers. For home use, they can do plenty: HA, Plex/Emby, etc…. And generally use less power than a full fledged desktop due to laptop CPU's.

Because most people will have other services they would want to support. If you have a NAS, many people also want a Plex/Emby Server. Or maybe you want to run a VPN and a torrent VM. Or maybe you want to run a VM with Blue Iris for your IP Cams? Or maybe a game server for say playing Minecraft? Or or or? It's a PC. If you have resources the skies the limit. Sure some "just want a NAS" but most will find other uses than just basic file sharing.

The minisforum NAS pro with the AMD AI 370 supposedly supports ECC memory. But that's like $900. But you do get 12 zen4 cores, a pcie slot, more NVMe drives, an even better iGPU in the 890M, and 10gbps lan as welll as 5 3.5" bays instead of 4. Maybe that's worth almost 3x to you…

There's always something else coming out, I just don't think the AceMagic one is a good deal at all especially with the weak processor. If it were me the Minisforum N5 Air would be my target right now at $500. But this with a 7? Year old 4 core processor would not be my choice. Maybe if it was $200. Feels more like this should be competing with the Intel N100/N150 boxes.

If you're building a basic NAS just for Storage, why you need so much processing power in the 1st place? Instead, you just need a processor which is capable enough to handle the NAS OS, good amount ports and storage options. The processor is couple of years old but it has still enough power to handle a standrad NAS setup and the benefit you'll get over Intel N series Processor based ones, are dual channel memory support, far more PCIe Lanes and way better performance, stronger integrated graphics.

Is kinda crazy how everyone is jumping on these "nas" boxes with a ridiculously overkill amount of power. Most dusty old home desktops can do anything you'd want a nas to do. Making sure you find a processor to support the encoding you want is basically it.

I got the Aoostar wtr pro a few months back and it's a great little nas box. This one looks like the same system just rebranded and with a lower end CPU. Still more than enough to run TrueNAS and a few containers. Neither supports ECC RAM though

Barebone doesn't come with any OS license for any mini PCs. However, people probably won't be using Windows for NAS steup in the 1st place.
