having stated that the M1 Pro has fans and sustains its performance indefinitely.
M5 throttles after about 30 minutes when connected to external monitor streaming 1080p videos + office work.

It stays in the SD slot all day everyday its mounted as external storage so you can use it as such. Its not the fastest SD card port, but if you use it for anything except video files/large files you should be fine its fast enough.
I have the adapter and a micro SD card 512gb for extra storage. You can go larger but the storage prices these days are pretty high.
