Part of the appeal of single-wheel IMO is the forced stability. This takes a little bit of that out of the equation, so I'd say better for beginners OR for people just trying to maximize reps without worrying about stability as much.
I have a single at home but have played with doubles. I've also used EZ curl and Olympic bars with plates to do ab rolls
