* Excellent sound quality for an ANC headphone
* Above-average passive listening performance
* Weaknesses in build quality, weight, and ANC refinement
Because this is an older model, most meaningful reviews now come from enthusiast communities rather than mainstream current-tech sites.
What reviewers consistently liked
Sound quality
This is the biggest strength.
Many users describe the M4U2 as sounding noticeably better than typical ANC competitors from its era like Bose QC25. Common themes:
* Deep, controlled bass
* Natural mids/vocals
* Smooth, non-fatiguing treble
* Surprisingly good detail for a closed ANC headphone
Several Reddit users described them as "fantastic sounding" and among the better closed-back headphones they had heard.
MajorHiFi's review particularly praised the midrange accuracy and overall musicality.
Isolation and ANC
The ANC was generally considered:
* Good
* Functional for planes/trains/offices
* Not class-leading
Most reviewers said Bose handled pure ANC better, but PSB handled music quality better.
Comfort
Mixed but generally positive:
* Large earcups
* Plush padding
* Comfortable for stationary listening
People with larger ears often liked them.
⸻
Most common complaints
Build quality concerns
This is the largest recurring negative.
Multiple long-term owners reported:
* Headband cracking
* Plastic fatigue
* Peeling materials
The headband crack issue appears repeatedly across forums.
Heavy weight
At roughly 360g with batteries, they are heavier than modern ANC headphones.
Users frequently mention:
* Fatigue during long commutes
* Bulkiness
* Less comfortable for walking/travel
Compared to modern Sony/Bose models, they feel dated ergonomically.
ANC electronics quirks
Some users reported:
* Hiss/noise floor
* Occasional electronic artifacts
* ANC slightly affecting sound quality
The ANC implementation is considered older-generation tech.
⸻
Overall assessment in 2026
Attribute Assessment
Sound quality Excellent for ANC class
ANC performance Good but outdated
Comfort Good for seated listening
Build durability Below average
Travel convenience Mediocre by modern standards
Value used Potentially very strong
Best fit
The M4U2 still makes sense for someone who:
* Prioritizes sound quality over ANC tech
* Wants a wired-capable travel headphone
* Finds a used pair cheaply
* Does not mind older industrial design
Less ideal for someone wanting:
* Modern ANC
* Lightweight portability
* USB-C
* Multipoint Bluetooth
* App EQ/features
Community summary
A concise way to summarize the reputation:
"Audiophile headphone first, ANC headphone second."
That exact sentiment appears repeatedly in enthusiast discussions.

If you want a real answer: these are old, old headphones. The ANC is bad by modern standards, they're wired only, and they're not super comfortable. The sound is excellent. But this is an odd purchase to make in 2026.
