About this Game:
  • Subnautica is an underwater adventure game set on an alien ocean planet. A massive, open world full of wonder and peril awaits you!
  • You have crash-landed on an alien ocean world, and the only way to go is down. Subnautica's oceans range from sun drenched shallow coral reefs to treacherous deep-sea trenches, lava fields, and bio-luminescent underwater rivers. Manage your oxygen supply as you explore kelp forests, plateaus, reefs, and winding cave systems. The water teems with life: Some of it helpful, much of it harmful.
  • After crash landing in your Life Pod, the clock is ticking to find water, food, and to develop the equipment you need to explore. Collect resources from the ocean around you. Craft diving gear, lights, habitat modules, and submersibles. Venture deeper and further form to find rarer resources, allowing you to craft more advanced items.

Community Reviews

Subnautica is a beautiful, highly replayable survival game that shines in exploration, base building, and long sessions, with an average playthrough around 30 hours. The current price is described as the lowest ever on Steam, and the game has held up well across PC, Game Pass, and even mobile. VR can be immersive and playable, but it needs community mods and can bring bugs or crashes. The deep ocean, giant creatures, and heavy base building can also make it less comfortable on weaker hardware or for anyone with water fears.

  • Survival-game fans who like getting lost and exploring, because the game offers a long playthrough with lots to discover.

  • VR players willing to mod, because community mods can make VR workable and add hand support.

  • Players who enjoy underwater horror and tension, because the deep-ocean setting and giant creatures can be unsettling.

  • Base builders who want a creative project, because the building system can be a lot of fun and keep you playing for hours.

  • Players with a fear of deep water or giant sea creatures, because the ocean setting can turn the game from relaxing into stressful.

  • VR players who want plug-and-play support, because VR can be basically unplayable without community mods.

  • Players on weaker hardware who want smooth base-building performance, because heavy bases can bog down even a PS5.

  • Players who want a spoiler-free guided experience, because looking up tips can flood recommendations with spoilers and the game expects you to embrace being lost.

Early access in 2 days! Which is likely the reason for this sale, to give some notice and reminders. I'm conflicted though... Really want to play and want to reward the dev team but also really want to punish the shady AF publisher for their greed, scheming and fraud.
A judge already did that, dev team got control back and the publisher has to pay them their agreed bonuses that they tried to weasel out of.

Was going to ask about VR. Check EPIC first though. It was a free game awhile back.
There are plenty of vids on how to mod it, this is my second favorite VR game. Not hard to mod and the community added hand support, it originally just had controller support in VR.

lol "stress-free" is very relative depending on if you have any phobias related to water and/or giant creatures in the water, but it's an amazing game!
It's so stressful for me but I love it. I hate deep water lol

If you are an Epic-free-game-collector, you might already own this. Check there first.
Very Solid advice. I always forget what games I have on epic.

Just a heads up.... Watching tutorials etc can crank out major spoilers in your algorithm. Don't look up tips or hints, just keep exploring. There is so much to this game that you can miss if you just go point to point completing objectives. In the plot of this game, you are lost. Embrace the lostness, create a paper map, and you will love it. One of the best games I've ever played.

I didn't know abt that! I only remember the game got a bad rep for some legal issue, so I was very hesitant if I should consider getting the new one. Good to know I no longer need to worry abt this!

Amazing game if you're into survival games. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but comes with a lot of hours of fun if it is.

NB: VR is basically unplayable without additional community mods.
Disagree; I finished this in VR. It certainly had its share of bugs and some crashes but I wouldn't call it unplayable. This game is very immersive in VR since when you SCUBA you also have a mask strapped to your face. Really bummed that they don't support VR in the follow-ups.

I miss the good days where you didn't have HUDs and automapping forced on you...

If you're wondering, the early access for Subnautica 2 is actually really fun.

I just got it from Google Play on sale for $3.50. I only played for 15 minutes to test, but it is playing nicely on my phone
