I know next to nothing about the correct pool chemistry. However, this thing worked like magic - half of the recommended dose cleared up my 40k gal green puddle overnight.

This isn't a simple answer. You can do some research to get a more detailed answer but essentially you want certain levels of CYA in your pool as it helps protect the chlorine from being depleted via the Sun. But if you have too much, then you actually need more chlorine to keep your pool clean. And you can't remove CYA without draining the pool and adding fresh water.
