The Irwin self adjusting wire stripper stands out as a versatile hand tool for stripping, cutting, and crimping insulated and non insulated terminals. It gets strong marks for long term use on speaker cable, Romex, house wiring, and stranded wire, with several reports calling it a huge time saver and a joy to use. The main drawback is that it can slip on some wire types, and the handle mounted crimper and pinch point draw criticism from some hands on users. A solid all in one option if you want extra crimping capability in the same tool.

  • Electricians and hobbyists stripping speaker cable or Romex, because it stays a huge time saver and works well across those wire types.

  • People who want an all-in-one stripper with terminal crimping, because it also crimps insulated and non-insulated terminals.

  • Frequent wire strippers who want a backup tool, because it feels good in hand and stays useful even when a separate crimper is preferred.

  • Users who value a long-lasting hand tool, because it has stayed in service for years and still gets daily use without finger pinching.

  • Users who need consistent performance on every wire type, because it can slip on certain wire types.

  • Buyers who want a dedicated crimper with more leverage, because the inside-handle crimper layout is less comfortable than a separate crimping tool.

  • People worried about hand safety around the grips, because the handle area can pinch fingers during stripping.

  • People stripping small-gauge wire, because auto strippers can work poorly on wires under 20 gauge.

Was about to buy this, but after reading a couple of reviews and read it has a pinch point on the handle, I said no way. I think I might have had this in the past, had a wire stripper that once pinched the inside of my finger bad when I was stripping a lot of wire.

Think I will wait for a deal on the Klein, never had problems with that brand.
I bought a pair of Kronos strippers from Radio Shack many years ago and I've never had an issue pinching my hand or fingers. I'm trying to figure how this can even happen. Has to be user-error.

I had this tool and can confirm it is a very efficient hand crimper. Just looking at this tool makes my hand hurt, knowing just how viscously it bites. I will not use it, and can't in good conscience give it away knowing how dangerous it is.

The Klein 110601 might be better, but it has a wire cutter between the handles. I just can't wrap my head around the idea of putting sharp crimping/ cutting teeth on the part of the tool where your hands go. The marketing folks driving this crap need to be forced to use these things every day.

I have the Klein 11063, which works great for most stuff. The only thing between the grips is a spring which could bite I suppose, but never has. For finer wire, I have a Klein 11057 manual stripper. Auto strippers don't work as well for many of the smaller than 20 gauge wires I need to strip, but I also have a Felo auto stripper that does a good job with a wide range of wires.

And if somehow the crimper part IS a selling feature (facepalm), do yourself a favor and just buy the actual right tool for the crimp connections you intend to make. These will absolutely guarantee lousy results on anything.

You're doing something wrong! VERY WRONG my dude!

I like these a lot better than the Klein that I was hoping were an upgrade to these, they were not. The only problem I have with these ones is the plastic stopping point, it's near useless but if you strip enough wires you get a feel for where it needs to be anyway.

I had these before and loved them. Had to give them away at airport security because they were longer than 7" (no tools longer than that, apparently... so stupid, especially since the guy with a 3 foot cane was fine to carry that through. Security Theater, indeed.).

Saw a deal on the Klein and how people recommended that, so I bought that this time around.

Both are great as wire strippers. The extra screw on the Klein is just for the wire-stop which is metal. Honestly, I never use those so I don't care about that... but it does move more easily on the Irwin if you use that feature. I always rotate these away, so that feature (and screw) are useless to me.

I do miss the extra crimper on the Irwin, but I ended up buying a ratcheting crimper so I don't care... just means I need to carry an extra tool.

In the end, both are excellent as wire strippers. As for the crimper, it's a nice-to-have but not a dealbreaker one way or the other.

And, I agree with @JayW7752, if you're cutting or pinching your hands in this area, you're doing something very wrong... I have never even come close to that being a problem. In fact many other tools have pinch or cut features in this area, never had an issue.

THIS ONE! The Klein can't crimp terminals but this one has the wire cutter & can crimp insulated and non-insulated terminals. Look at the inside of the handles on both. I have no idea why anyone would buy one with less capability. I'd buy some from Harbor Freight with the crimpers before the Klein without them.
Personally I'm not a fan of wire cutters and crimpers on the inside handles. I ended up buying the Doyle 9" crimper from Harbor Freight. More leverage to get a tighter crimp with the slightly longer handle and easier to slip the wire and lug into the end.

I prefer separate crimpers too. But it's nice to have these already in hand just in case.

Love these wire strippers
Just used these today. They are one of those tools that I always pat myself on the back for getting, since they are just such a joy to use. Considering buying a backup...

I am curious why that is. I would have thought Klein would be better since they don't have any plastic parts on it
