Probably ram will have a more limiting factor in the coming years, depending on use case.

50% more RAM on M4 is certainly better than M5 with 16GB even if you are using the GPU's advanced features.

RAM is about 30% faster on M5 and GPU is 30% faster. For local LLM fans AI models could be 3.5x to 4x faster. Base CPU is 20% faster. WiFi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 - all that make M5 worth the extra money. (Both base chips are TB4 - only M5 pro and above is TB 5).

For most ppl it seems the Amazon deal for M5 Air with 16/512GB for $950 + Amazon Chase 5% cb is better

Does anyone know know how the Costco additional 1 year warranty works with Apples extended warranty coverage. Meaning, you would have 2 years of coverage with the Costco extension. Could you then buy the 3 year Apple warranty (at the end of the 2 years), or do you have to buy it up front. Otherwise, it's just overlapping coverage. Thx.

Wouldn't local LLMs need way more than 16gb though? Plus the Air throttles heavily under load

Are you actually suggesting people run LLM's with 16gb RAM? That seems a non-starter. Your independent points are valid but they don't add up to recommending a 16gb M5 for LLM purposes

If for whatever reason you want to run Windows or Linux using parallels in the future, then more RAM makes sense. Also chrome tabs will only get bigger in few years. Totally depends on your use case.

8B models should work fine, no? Whatever the use case might be.

Some Local LLMs work on phone as well. 24G air can host 17B params models at Q4. It's good for some basic work where the context is limited to 128K tokens... And yes I agree - if you need a machine mainly for local LLMs consistently - you wouldn't choose a MacBook Air in the first place.
