Why did you have to replace your motor? What makes you believe that the gas you were using was the culprit?
It started to have this abnormal noise that would not go away. I buy top tier gas just as an insurance policy, especially living in CA.

Shell is anyway 5-10% costlier than Sam's/Costco. Unless you only prefer shell, not a deal
Shell is one of the best gas products on the market. Using cheaper gas products will cost you more in the long run

I haven't checked lately, but I remember someone saying gas would be $2 a gallon. So your compact must have a 25 gallon tank? yummy

Ever since I had to replace my motor, I decided 10% premium was worth it for peace of mind for one of the best gases out there. Plus I don't have Costco and Sam's Club has been known to be lower tier. It's probably overkill but I am scarred.
Isn't Costco gas considered a top tier gas?

Sams /Murphyis not top tier. Costco is the Top of the top tier, even over Chevron/Texaco.

This deal makes Shell 10% cheaper than normal Shell prices. So it would make it about the same price as Sam's/Costco. So pretty good if you don't have a membership.

amongst top tier gas, Costco is known for using high(est) volume of detergents. Chevron techron is famous for PEA, which is good for deep cleaning carbon, and Shell v-power uses a formula that adds extra engine protection and friction reduction. Top tier also started rolling out Plus version so if you see the "Top Tier +" sticker at your gas station, it's supposedly better for modern/GDI engines...me personally, I just go with whatever is cheapest top tier, but I avoid costco because the line is always too long. I use to pump at Sam's until I found out it is not top tier gas. I would pump at costco but the lines vs the amount i fill up at a time that my time is worth about the 3 bucks I would save rather than driving further and waiting about 20-30 min to pump gas. Costco is the better way to go for most people but not me, thats just my perspective.

What car do you have, NSX? Integra? And have you ever pumped at Costco? I have the MKV Supra and I pumped gas at Costco a few times and I felt for whatever reason the gas burned faster. I went back to Shell after 3 fills. I hate waiting in the lines too to save a couple of bucks. I usually pump at the halfway mark for my car and its usually about 5 gallons. It is cheaper cost for gas at costco.. but the amount I'm saving on 5 gallons vs the time it takes driving further and waiting. I rather just pump Shell and its better for my car.

There is little reason to believe that "toptier" gas is worth the extra $, other than a lot of marketing based on a terrible "scientific" marketing piece by AAA.
When that "study" gets "cited", they only talk about valve deposits, but 2/3 piston top deposits were lower and 3/3 cylinder head deposits were lower with non-toptier fuels.
There is no peer review of the "study". Details are sparse within. It's 100% marketing.
If you have a GDI engine, like most new cars, it can't even wash over the intake valve, getting rid of the one way that top tier is supposedly actually helpful.
You're being scammed. Buy the cheapest gas. It all comes from the same refineries.
