This hard shell rooftop tent stands out for fast setup, off ground sleeping, and the convenience of camping without hunting for a flat campsite. The rigid shell and built in lighting, mattress, and storage make it feel like a practical overland setup, and the price is described as decent for the category. The main cautions are weight and fit, since the 185 pound tent can exceed factory roof rack limits and still affects driving load, fuel economy, and vehicle handling. Level parking, wind noise, and the need to air it out after use also come up, making it a better fit for vehicles and trips that can support the extra bulk.

  • The elevated sleeping platform can reduce concerns about uneven ground, mud, and water during camping nights.

  • The hard-shell rooftop tent can be set up and broken down quickly for roadside rest stops without needing a campground.

  • Rooftop tents can be convenient for solo or couple camping because they avoid planning every night in advance.

  • The tent can remain usable over multiple seasons, with reports of continued good condition after years of use.

  • The tent's weight can exceed many factory roof-rack limits, so shoppers should verify both static and dynamic load ratings.

  • Wind can cause the tent to flap at night, which can disrupt sleep during breezy conditions.

  • The tent may require leveling the vehicle to prevent sliding, which can mean carrying leveling blocks or finding flat rocks.

  • The main window design may lack a rainfly, which can lead to leaking and water blasting issues in wet weather.

Seems like a solution in search of a problem to me. But I guess you could park it somewhere cool, like the edge of the Grand Canyon and charge exorbitant airbnb fees for people to sleep in it.

so, does dynamic load apply to uhm, adult recreational activities?
Playing cards? Those don't add much to the weight.

I think I'll just recline my seat all the way instead, if I want to lay down.

These seem cool but are not practical. You can't drive anywhere after setting up the tent. Vehicle must be level. You are stuck camping at the vehicle. Unlike backpacking tents, can't be easily inverted to shake out debris.

thanks for the post. any idea how much it affects your mpg?
Mine costs me about 2mpg. Not a huge amount but noticeable, especially considering I don't get very good mileage to begin with. YMMV (finally get to use this literally, LOL)

I have done overlanding, and the ONLY time these are even semi useful is if you are moving camp sites daily, and even then, the hassle of getting up and into it, and more importantly getting off of them in the middle of the night when you have to take a piss.....well a pop up A frame tent, which is what I use....much less expensive, doesn't destroy your MPG like this thing will, and if something happens and it breaks, well it won't cost $900 plus to replace. Every overlander I talk to all tried them and then sold them.
So I don't like mine and it isn't useful? You don't like these, that's okay, but that doesn't mean they aren't useful for other people. Justify not buying it however you want, no one is twisting your arm, but that doesn't mean they have no use. I have about 60 nights on mine and it's been great, and is my second rooftop tent. I want to upgrade but really don't need to because after 3+ years it's still fine. Lots of overlanders I know love them, but you're free to keep going out of your way to bash them, if you have that much time on your hands.

I know what it is but I would rather just sleep in the back of the vehicle instead of on the roof.
Good for you, but for some of us, there's no room in the back for a human because we go on long trips.

we did that as boys. As men, we overland - the pursuit of vehicle-based exploration. Understand over landing how it works. What takes you 30 minutes in your Coleman tent to set up - we are deployed in three minutes....
Hahaha hahaha I bet my Accord has been up more mountains and down steeper trails than most of the Tacomas or 4runners these are slapped on. BTW it takes me 15min to set up my tent. In my experience(I camp twice a month in the PNW) most RTT owners regret the purchase.
