Other than battery life I'm not some ultra marathoner or deep sea diver goal mostly is to have something untethered from my phone. Not sure if ultra 2 is overkill.

Ultra definitely gets better battery life--charge it every two to three days--but you have to like the hefty style; personally the thing is taller than my wrist is wide. For my 42 mm Series 11, battery life is one full day+night but never two, and only if untethered time is limited, e.g., tracking one ~45 minute run while streaming to AirPods and making a few texts/calls. It does charge quickly even on my older Belkin stand, so I just feed it twice a day while brushing my teeth. Hope this anecdata helps

Tried on an ultra 3 at the apple store a few days ago. It is significantly heavier than my 46mm watch 10. I suppose people get used to it, but my 46mm watch 10 is so light I forget it's there. I'm personally not willing to give up that almost-not-there feeling for more battery life. To each his own though...

For 400$ it's not overkill. however it would be pretty banged up though.
