I wonder if kitty toenails would get stuck in the mesh.
Not that I've noticed. These seem to work better for us than the 2 layer mats that are a soft rubber material with a honeycomb as the top layer. Use the scoop away litter from Costco.
I find chenille rugs (low pile if your cats are scratchy) works best out of all the mats that I've tried. They seem to catch litter better than honeycomb or these mesh mats.. and you can toss them in the washer once in awhile to keep them nice and clean
These mats are small and expensive.
Use something like cheap indoor/outdoor carpet, I have a piece about 4 feet wide x 6 feet long; litter box sits on the far end of it. Menards sells this by the square foot; you can get 18-24 sq feet for about $10-13, about the price of the mats in OP.
Clumping litter sticks to their fur and the cat will be tracking litter more than two feet, so small mats don't do much. With the longer carpet, more litter gets caught, but the reality is, some litter will be carried even further than 6-8 feet.
These mats are really good, when I read coil mesh I think metal, it's not, it's just rubber mesh and does not get stuck in the cats claws. It does collect a lot of the sawdust though and I just pour it back into the box every couple of days. I use the pine horse bedding pellets from Tractor Supply $8 for a 40 lb bag and when the cat pees on them they explode into absorbent sawdust. No stinky odor, just a slight pine scent. All you need to do is throw a single layer in the litter box, I use a 30 oz drink cup as a measure and it doesn't look like much but they'll expand when wet. I change it every 1-2 weeks when I can see that the pellets have all burst into sawdust and are getting saturated and of course I pick up the poop every day with tongs. I keep the box in the bathroom and it's super easy to vacuum up any sawdust that ends up on the floor.
