The Wio Tracker L1 Pro is a compact LoRa and Meshtastic node for off grid texting, GPS sharing, and other low power mesh communication. It connects to a phone through Bluetooth and can also work through a local network, while Meshtastic lets messages hop device to device without WiFi or cell towers. Antenna upgrades, especially the muzi whip, are described as making a huge difference in range. The main caveat is the stock SMA connector is male, so some antennas need a female adapter or connector swap. Each person in a mesh needs their own device.

I own this. It's excellent. Replaced the antenna with the muzi whip antenna is it's now on steroids! Anyone itching to get into meshtastic should grab this.

It's a long range radio used to send text, location or other basic information. There are different systems you can use it with, but the most popular is Meshtastic which lets you send text messages to others with similar radios. It's a mesh network so you don't have to directly connect to the radio you are messaging.

This device contains a low-power radio chip(lora technology) that can send text messages for miles. Meshtastic or MeshCore(firmware/app) links a bunch of these radios together so your message hops device-to-device to reach someone — no WiFi, no cell towers, just radio waves.

What you can use it for

  • Off-grid texting between devices without cell service
  • Sharing GPS locations with friends/group members
  • Emergency/backcountry communication
  • Vehicle or gear tracking
  • Creating local private mesh networks
  • Relaying messages across multiple nodes for longer range
I used AI to sum it up, but it uses lora wan protocol to send long range communication. Lora was originally being used in the agricultural market for tracking cattle using low power solar tags on their ears. It has limitations, but it's great in certain scenarios. It's also been piloted in another country for tacking guests and hikers in national parks in case of emergencies, etc.

And how does this integrate with an ESP32? I'm not seeing much info on the site. (Am on mobile, so maybe it's limited.)

Dumb question, but how do you type on it? Does it use your phone or is there something else needed to make this work?

It's powered by nRF52840 which is a more modern microcontroller processor similar to ESP32, but with better power management features for battery-powered devices. You do not need a separate ESP32 for this.

This radio device connects to your phone via Bluetooth, or to your local network via wifi. You will connect to the device using Meshtastic app on your phone. All the messaging will be done via the app. Some firmwares will also have a messaging webapp built in to the device, so once you connect it to your local network you will be able to navigate to the device's IP address in your web browser which will open the Meshtastic webapp.

Funny, I just cleaned out their stock of soil moisture sensors the other day. They have all kinds of super-interesting stuff like this.
