This refurbished 16 inch MacBook Pro is still valued as a strong pro level machine, especially for the 120 hertz HDR display, larger screen, better speakers, and 1 terabyte of storage. It handles everyday work, browsing, documents, virtual machines, and even heavy use without trouble, and the price looks appealing versus the original $2799 MSRP. The main tradeoff is age, since macOS support is nearing its later years and newer M3 to M5 models can be faster on paper. The bottom dent and the possibility of a weak battery are the main refurb risks, though replacement batteries are available. A solid option if the screen and storage matter more than chasing the newest chip.
Remote workers running virtual machines and everyday apps, because the machine handles VMs, browsing, and work tasks without problems.
Buyers who want a pro-style laptop for several more years, because it should stay usable for about four to five years with continued macOS and security support.
It should still run the latest macOS now, but Apple support is likely nearing its end. Based on Apple's typical laptop support window, it may get about 3 more major macOS releases and a couple more years of security updates, making it usable for roughly 4-5 more years.
Yes for browsing, email, documents, spreadsheets, shopping, online banking, and YouTube, where the difference versus newer M2/M3/M4/M5 machines is usually marginal. It also handles heavier workloads like VMs on a 32GB model, and the 16-inch Pro's 120Hz HDR display and speakers are the main practical advantages over an Air.
It is about $2,000 off the original $2,799 MSRP, which makes it a strong discount for a 16-inch MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage. The tradeoff is that newer M3/M4 machines can be faster on paper, but this model keeps the premium display, speakers, and large storage.
At least one unit had a major dent on the bottom. If the battery turns out to be poor, an aftermarket replacement battery is available for about $40 on Amazon and reportedly less on AliExpress.
What is the most recent macOS able to be manually run on this...EDIT NEVERMIND
Apple generally will support their laptops for five or six years. So this will run the latest OS, but within a couple of years it won't be supported.I have an Intel MBP, bought in early 2020 and it runs the latest OS. I'm not expecting that it will be able to download the next update. But it still will function for a long time.
Found a guy on FB sell his M1 Pro 16gb/1tb 16" Perfect condition with 70 charge cycles for $700. I turned it down. Seems like a lot for such old tech. I know it's still good and all.

It's a 4 and a half year old laptop. $2799 MSRP so you're getting it for $2000 off. Same chassis and display as the M5 Pro. It's still good for another 4-5 years at the very least. Extrapolating from Apple's history with Intel. M1 Pro is most likely only getting 3 more major releases of macOS updates with the last one landing late 2028 and 2-3 years of security updates following that. So the M1 Pro will be usable for 4-5 years at least which is how long you expect a laptop to last for. The M1 Pro will easily last you well into 2030-2031.
For browsing the internet, email, creating documents and spreadsheets, shopping, online banking, and watching YouTube any other M2/M3/M4/M5 is going to be an incredibly marginal upgrade. I think people would be hard pressed to notice any difference.
I did come across a used 13" M4 Air 1TB for $600 still under warranty and passed on that deal too.
Getting a M3 air might be faster than this. Anyone made comparisons?
M3 Air faster single-core CPU speeds in a synthetic benchmark; so for spec-sheet nerds where a laptop is like some dick-measuring contest sure it's a better buy.
Is your average user going to notice a speed difference in real-world day to day usage browsing the internet, email, creating documents and spreadsheets, shopping, online banking, and watching YouTube? No
What will they notice? The premium 120hz display with HDR and more screen real estate than a Macbook Air and premium speakers of the Macbook Pro.

Same. Bought it as soon as they announced Apple Silicon. It's on the last leg of OS upgrade support. It will get security support for a short while longer.
