The Pro 34 is a roomy, easy-to-use pellet smoker that works well for burgers, chicken, ribs, brisket, and other low-and-slow cooks, with the extra cooking space over the Pro 22 standing out. Regular cleaning and good pellets help it run smoothly, and some owners have used it for years with overnight cooks and no major issues. The main knocks are pellet feeding hiccups, temperature swings at 225 degrees, messy ash cleanup, and thin heat retention in cold weather. It feels like a capable entry-level smoker, especially if you want more real estate without stepping up to a pricier model.

  • Weekend pitmasters cooking occasional briskets and pork shoulders, because it is easy to use and handles overnight cooks without constant fire management.

  • Families needing extra grate space for larger batches, because the Pro 34 offers more cooking volume than the smaller model.

  • Beginners wanting a straightforward pellet smoker, because it is simple to run and works well with regular cleaning.

  • Casual cooks who smoke a few times a year, because it feels like a decent value at that usage level.

  • Serious weekly low-and-slow smokers, because it needs babysitting and has failed repeatedly on overnight cooks.

  • Outdoor cooks who want a rugged, set-and-forget pellet grill, because the thin walls, temperature swings, and control issues can make it unreliable.

  • People planning long overnight smokes in cold weather, because it can lose heat and go out on 225°F.

  • Buyers who need dependable fire safety, because the inside can catch fire and the unit may stop working after about a year.

Are these worth the price point? Or are you just paying for the name with the same quality as other brands?

God I wish I could this 100 times. Same model. 4 parties and about $400-500 in meats lost because of this exact issue. They made me FaceTime them to show them my grill and babied me through it all. I've owned a camp chef for 5 years before I got the traeger, I know what I doing. The rep told me:1. This isn't supposed to be run a long time without me monitoring it. Like what? This appliance can't appliance?2. Traeger pellets only. Because money of course.3. I shouldn't smoke outdoors. Because it can get windy and that could cause flame issues. Like does he have a dedicated smoker room?
Oh my goodness...that's the craziest support call ever. If you could have recorded that conversation - especially the bit about not smoking outdoors - you'd have comedy gold on social media!

Between this thread and all the other Traeger SD threads going on right now, as an owner of this exact smoker, it has been very therapeutic to know I'm not alone.

If you're thinking about this grill, all these comments should serve as cautionary tales before investing time and money in a Traeger grill. Look elsewhere. Go to Sam's for the Pro Series, get a Camp Chef, get a Masterbuilt. Let's just stop supporting the Traeger insanity!

Traeger used to be the gold standard but sounds like they got cheap like everyone else asked on these comments

Can anyone with experience chime in on the pro 780 model? My buddy just sold it to me for 300 bucks and he's made some unbelievable meals on it for us. Always maintained. Are the pro model built better?

This is a good entry level pellet smoker. I've had this for a couple of years now. As long as you clean it regularly, it works like a champ. I cook on this almost every other week. So, I've done at least a brisket a month. Great little smoker that is a little high maintenance (as far as the cleaning). Smoke flavor is light, but the trade off is you are not managing the fire all night.

I've heard people not really loving their Traeger but must admit I really love mine. Amazing for burgers, chicken, etc. Excellent addition to my gas grill and electric smoker as each has a place and specific use!

Grill/smoker forums are so crazy. "You're gonna want the Wi-Fi!" "Avoid the Wi-Fi!" "Traeger for life!" "Traeger = Trash" "This is great! Had it for 20 years!" "Ate my first born. Zero stars."

If you have a Sam's membership, I'd really recommend this one over the Traeger. I'm pretty active in the pellet grill forum on Reddit and folks really seem to like this one (and the Traegers seem to have a decent amount of issues according to folks). Plus it comes with a chamber to add some additional smoke, something pellet grills struggle with, and an induction burner on the side, all for fifty bucks more.

I've had this smoker for about 4 years now. I use it probably 3-4 times a month all year long. I've smoked pork butts, ribs, briskets, chicken thighs, wings, leg of lamb, turkeys, sausages, the whole farm. I've done probably a dozen overnight cooks as well, the biggest cook was three 12 pound pork butts. I've never had any issues with failed cooks or running out of pellets. I'm in FL, so maybe in a place that gets cold you may burn through more pellets trying to maintain temp, but typically I top off the hopper when I start at 11pm, and when I wake up at 7am I have enough pellets left to push another 5 hours. I've yet to have to repair/replace anything on mine despite constant use. It's not going to give the same smoke flavor as a stick burner, but it's easy enough to use that my wife and teenagers with no aspirations to learn fire management are confident enough to go out there and make dinner on it without any help from me.

I bought this a couple years ago for the same price at HD. Upgraded from a Pro 22. The extra real estate is well worth it.
