The Pro 34 is a roomy, easy-to-use pellet smoker that works well for burgers, chicken, ribs, brisket, and other low-and-slow cooks, with the extra cooking space over the Pro 22 standing out. Regular cleaning and good pellets help it run smoothly, and some owners have used it for years with overnight cooks and no major issues. The main knocks are pellet feeding hiccups, temperature swings at 225 degrees, messy ash cleanup, and thin heat retention in cold weather. It feels like a capable entry-level smoker, especially if you want more real estate without stepping up to a pricier model.

  • Weekend pitmasters cooking occasional briskets and pork shoulders, because it is easy to use and handles overnight cooks without constant fire management.

  • Families needing extra grate space for larger batches, because the Pro 34 offers more cooking volume than the smaller model.

  • Beginners wanting a straightforward pellet smoker, because it is simple to run and works well with regular cleaning.

  • Casual cooks who smoke a few times a year, because it feels like a decent value at that usage level.

  • Serious weekly low-and-slow smokers, because it needs babysitting and has failed repeatedly on overnight cooks.

  • Outdoor cooks who want a rugged, set-and-forget pellet grill, because the thin walls, temperature swings, and control issues can make it unreliable.

  • People planning long overnight smokes in cold weather, because it can lose heat and go out on 225°F.

  • Buyers who need dependable fire safety, because the inside can catch fire and the unit may stop working after about a year.

Bought mine on a $450 deal from Ace Hardware Thanksgiving of '24, free assembly, delivery, cover, and a 40lb bag of pellets. Liked the deal, but the Traeger, not so much. After using a year and a half, have made some good stuff on it...couple of briskets, ribs, pork butt, ribeye roasts, jalapeno poppers, etc. Things turn out good enough, but this thing is a hassle to baby while cooking low and slow overnight. Out of 9-10 overnight cooks, only two have been successful. Thankfully the Meater probe has saved me and my expensive meat by letting me know when the pellets stopped and at peak temperatures so I could restart and continue either after fixing the Traeger issue, or finishing in the kitchen oven. Most times the Traeger fails, it's because the pellet hopper creates a pellet funnel where a middle "cone" empties out of the hopper but no more pellets are pulled by gravity into the auger. Without pellets, the heat stops. So I wake up in the morning to no smoke, a cold Traeger, and to open the hopper to see over half the pellets remain but a empty hollow cone shape in the middle of the pellets. A simple tap on the side knocks the remaining pellets into the auger, but when you cook overnight, what can you do? Thing is a pain to clear out ashes too, and it makes a lot of messy, fine-soot ashes. The whole experience isn't as "premium" as an expensive Traeger would make you think using a pellet grill would be. In fact, this thing is as bare bones of a smoker as you can get...no shelves, no convenience features, storage or anything as other brands have, and don't even get me started on how thin the walls of this thing is. It retains very little heat, so good luck cooking anything in the late-fall and winter. I'll never buy another Traeger.
Thanks for the review

I have a GMG that was similar and had all types of problems. I stopped buying cheap pellets and almost all my issues went away. If by chance you're using the cheap stuff. try using some better brands and see if that helps. I'm using bear mountain pellets most of the time now and haven't had an issue in a long time.

Good advice. Other than price, what is the indicator of better quality pellets? I'm not loyal to any brand, and have tried several. Kingsford, Members Mark, Pit Boss, Bear Mountain, Royal Oak, others. Can't recall any one performing any better or worse than the others.

^^^^^THIS! Thankfully I bought mine from Costco and returned it. The inside literally caught on fire. Fortunately I caught it as it really started to go and was able to dump a bucket of water on it. That was about a month of ownership. I absolutely remember how cheap the assembled parts looked at the time but it was only after the fire that I read reviews how they had outsourced all manufacturing to China. I'm fine with stuff made in China but not cheap parts and/or poor quality control.
I can tell you why yours caught on fire.
  1. You never cleaned it.
  2. You didn't go thru shutoff procedure.
  3. After not cleaning it, you tried to use it as a grill.

I've had mine for about 10 years - bought at Costco. I would say it's been hit and miss, until I swapped out the controller for a PID controller. Temperatures are near perfect - it's become more like set it and forget it. Mine came with meat temp probes and wifi. I can remote shutoff too. With the original controller, I had big temp excursions and couldn't keep low temps.

Save up and get something that will last, especially if it'll be fully exposed to the elements. Look at Blazn Grills, Yoder, or arguably the best, Lone Star Grillz. All heavy plate metal and made in USA.

I'm honestly amazed Traeger has remained relevant in the pellet cooker world. They had the patent, but as soon as it was gone, better and cheaper competitors flooded the market. Today, Traeger is mediocre and overpriced

Get one that is 100% hardwood. The major brands are mostly Oak/Alder with flavored oils or tiny amounts of the wood you actually want. Lumberjack and Cookin Pellets are 100% the wood they describe. ie Hickory, Mesquite, Cherry.Another good brand is BBQ delight, all are 100% hardwood and don't hide what the pellets are.

Grill/smoker forums are so crazy. "You're gonna want the Wi-Fi!" "Avoid the Wi-Fi!" "Traeger for life!" "Traeger = Trash" "This is great! Had it for 20 years!" "Ate my first born. Zero stars."
Have you owned a smoker with wifi and electronics? I think you might like it/

I suppose there's always those few outliers but I haven't experienced (knock on wood) any issues with mine. In fact, I bought mine specifically because of people's testimonials about being owning for a decade or two.
Of course, I'll bet those earlier models were made here vs today's made in china stuff.
I kind of always got a weird vibe from Traeger testimonials. They definitely get good ratings and all, but it seems like a Chevy/Ford/Dodge pickup type of thing, where owners all claim their brand is the absolute best (to convince themselves they're happy despite issues?) and everything else is complete junk. IDK, I'm on my second Pit Boss and love the features and usability, though both have had problems. Considering all options for my next one.

I bought the Webber Smoque earlier this year after doing some research. Love it.
Any issues with it? My bro has a Weber Searwood and loves it, but I haven't seen or used it.
