The Pro 34 is a roomy, easy-to-use pellet smoker that works well for burgers, chicken, ribs, brisket, and other low-and-slow cooks, with the extra cooking space over the Pro 22 standing out. Regular cleaning and good pellets help it run smoothly, and some owners have used it for years with overnight cooks and no major issues. The main knocks are pellet feeding hiccups, temperature swings at 225 degrees, messy ash cleanup, and thin heat retention in cold weather. It feels like a capable entry-level smoker, especially if you want more real estate without stepping up to a pricier model.

Common Questions (5)

  • It can be reliable for overnight cooks, but some owners report pellet-feed failures, especially when the hopper forms a hollow cone and pellets stop reaching the auger. Others run it overnight frequently with zero issues, so regular monitoring and a full hopper matter.

  • Yes. It is described as high-maintenance for cleaning, with messy fine-soot ash buildup and difficult ash removal, and regular cleaning is important for reliable operation and to reduce fire risk.

  • Yes. Pit Boss pellets are reported to work flawlessly, and better-quality 100% hardwood pellets are recommended over cheaper blends because they can reduce feeding and performance issues.

  • Yes. The Pro 34 is preferred over the Pro 22 for the larger cook volume and extra real estate, making it a better fit when you want more room for briskets, pork butts, or multiple items at once.

  • 250°F is the safer setting for this model if you want to avoid shutdowns. The grill is described as notorious for going out at 225°F, so bumping the temperature can help keep the fire lit.

Treager is just china junk anymore. Buy something you can actually get parts and customer service for.
China has the capability to manufacture extremely high quality products, that it's made there isn't relevant. Traeger cheaping out on the design of this thing and the result being junk is.

It's crazy how expensive these things are. I know people rave about it but it's hard to justify the cost. We had one at work (ambulance service) and it stopped working after about a year. I wonder if all these are made in the same factory as cheaper brands and then rebranded and shipped out.

For the price it's a decent deal. Stepping up to the Ironwood 885 would run you twice as much. If you're serious about smoking (all night smokes every week), probably not for you. If you are going to use six times your first year and maybe three times a year after that, it's fine.

RecTeq is made in China and is quite good quality (and excellent customer service). Had my boss get one, and many years later he still loves it. (I have a PG500 from Cookshack, a bit different grade, but he liked the stuff that came off it so much he got the RecTeq)

Is this really normally $730? What's the usual going price?
This IS an actual sale off usual MSRP, but they do it yearly FWIW.

A pellet jam in the auger/hopper was my biggest concern when getting a pellet smoker. Fortunately I went with the Pitboss 850dx from Lowe's during last years sale. Have not had a single pellet jam after few dozen cooks--most being overnighters.

I'm not endorsing the Pitboss just as every pellet smoker has pros and cons, but repeated pellet jams is an absolute deal breaker.

Bought mine on a $450 deal from Ace Hardware Thanksgiving of '24, free assembly, delivery, cover, and a 40lb bag of pellets. Liked the deal, but the Traeger, not so much. After using a year and a half, have made some good stuff on it...couple of briskets, ribs, pork butt, ribeye roasts, jalapeno poppers, etc. Things turn out good enough, but this thing is a hassle to baby while cooking low and slow overnight. Out of 9-10 overnight cooks, only two have been successful. Thankfully the Meater probe has saved me and my expensive meat by letting me know when the pellets stopped and at peak temperatures so I could restart and continue either after fixing the Traeger issue, or finishing in the kitchen oven. Most times the Traeger fails, it's because the pellet hopper creates a pellet funnel where a middle "cone" empties out of the hopper but no more pellets are pulled by gravity into the auger. Without pellets, the heat stops. So I wake up in the morning to no smoke, a cold Traeger, and to open the hopper to see over half the pellets remain but a empty hollow cone shape in the middle of the pellets. A simple tap on the side knocks the remaining pellets into the auger, but when you cook overnight, what can you do? Thing is a pain to clear out ashes too, and it makes a lot of messy, fine-soot ashes. The whole experience isn't as "premium" as an expensive Traeger would make you think using a pellet grill would be. In fact, this thing is as bare bones of a smoker as you can get...no shelves, no convenience features, storage or anything as other brands have, and don't even get me started on how thin the walls of this thing is. It retains very little heat, so good luck cooking anything in the late-fall and winter. I'll never buy another Traeger.
I own two of these, run them overnight frequently, zero issues.

Care to share your secrets for an issue-free overnight pellet cook? If I was running quantities to justify two of these low-end Traegers, I think I'd step up to something better suited. Hell, electric smokers are almost as good and 99% issue-free.

If you have a Sam's membership, I'd really recommend this one over the Traeger. I'm pretty active in the pellet grill forum on Reddit and folks really seem to like this one (and the Traegers seem to have a decent amount of issues according to folks). Plus it comes with a chamber to add some additional smoke, something pellet grills struggle with, and an induction burner on the side, all for fifty bucks more.

The Sam's Pro Series grills are the real deal. I have the Pro Series gas grill and griddle combo. Thing is build like a tank, thick metal, doors that work, plenty of storage and convenience features, and cool back-lit knobs to let you know when the gas is off/on. Haven't seen this pellet grill, but knowing about this Traeger and the Pro Series line, I'd say it'd put the Traeger to shame.

^^^^^THIS! Thankfully I bought mine from Costco and returned it. The inside literally caught on fire. Fortunately I caught it as it really started to go and was able to dump a bucket of water on it. That was about a month of ownership. I absolutely remember how cheap the assembled parts looked at the time but it was only after the fire that I read reviews how they had outsourced all manufacturing to China. I'm fine with stuff made in China but not cheap parts and/or poor quality control.

I actually bought the previous generation of this pellet grill from Sam's after my terrible experience with Traeger. It was also returned. The assembly was a bit of a pain but your spot on that it is built like a tank. The issue I experienced and other reviewers have noted is the temperature sensors, probes and control system. I cannot tell you how many times I overcooked low and slow cooks. I even tried calibrating and using the different "P" settings that I found on YouTube. I got mine at a ridiculously cheap price off-season and had been using my own temperature probes as a work-around. I was torn as to whether it was worth returning but finally did so after realizing I could at least get a credit for a better grill. I believe the Pro I bought is the previous generation to this one as it does not have the induction plate or light-up knobs. Hopefully they have fixed the issues I mention on this newer model.

God I wish I could this 100 times. Same model. 4 parties and about $400-500 in meats lost because of this exact issue. They made me FaceTime them to show them my grill and babied me through it all. I've owned a camp chef for 5 years before I got the traeger, I know what I doing. The rep told me:1. This isn't supposed to be run a long time without me monitoring it. Like what? This appliance can't appliance?2. Traeger pellets only. Because money of course.3. I shouldn't smoke outdoors. Because it can get windy and that could cause flame issues. Like does he have a dedicated smoker room?
