Tapo's fingerprint deadbolt stands out for fast, keyless entry and easy installation, with a software experience that feels like a big upgrade over older smart locks. It works with Home Assistant through SmartThings, includes a physical key override, and has a USB C port on the bottom for emergency charging from outside. The rubber keypad is praised for being more tactile than capacitive touch, especially when carrying items or for kids who cannot remember numbers. The main drawback is battery life, which can run down in a couple of months or less. A practical smart lock if you want quick access and flexible backup options.

Common Questions (4)

  • It has a physical key override above the logo near the bottom, and a USB-C port on the bottom for external power. The USB-C connection only supplies power, so it can help you get in even without a key.

  • It is reported to be very easy to install, with a software experience that feels like a big upgrade over older smart locks. The rubber keypad is also described as more tactile than capacitive keypads, which helps for quick entry when carrying items.

  • It can work with Home Assistant through SmartThings integration. That makes it a practical option if you want the lock tied into a broader smart-home setup.

  • Battery life can be short: one non-fingerprint Tapo lock reportedly lasts a couple of months on Energizer industrial batteries and about a month on USB-C rechargeables. It also turns off notifications around 10% battery to preserve power.

Good timing, just bought a house and already firmly in the Tapo ecosystem with cameras. Will also be trying out the Tapo video doorbell.

Also, there is a USB-C connector on the bottom, so you can charge the battery from outside in case you don't have a key.
Big note that the USB-C connector on the outside only supplies power to the device. No data lines.

I have the non fingerprint Tapo model I got for $50 in my shed out back for about a year now. Instantly alerts to all locking and unlocking functions, however eats thru batteries. I get a couple months out of energizer industrial batteries and about the same out of rechargables. Just got some USB-C rechargables and only lasted a month with those. Love the lock and love the instant notifications and the Tapo infrastructure as their cameras are great, but wanted to point this out. I like it much better than the plane jane smart locks. It does turn off notifications to preserve battery when down to 10% or less
