Refurb is still available for that price at eBay, but it comes with one 5000mAh Fast Power Bank, instead of two at Costco. It possibly doesn't cost $40, but it should be included in the comparison of "new vs. refurb, one power bank vs two, 30 day return vs lifetime, etc."

I have one of these and I wouldn't buy one especially if you plan to use it as a UPS and even more so for networking gear. I have one and it has been such a disappointment. You cannot update this and have the AC inverter running. So this means your networking gear will be shut off. This would be ok if it actually downloaded the update first before turning off the AC inverter. When I need to update this, I have to connect it to my cell phones hotspot and my entire network is down while it updates. Such a pain in the ass. The second major flaw if this device has to do with the LFP batteries and the device keeping its charge/discharge calibration curve. Over time (I am talking like 1 or 2 months) the device loses how much charge it has. Then when power is lost it will quickly run to zero (this like 2 minutes) and shut off. You then have to charge and discharge the device 3 times before the charge/discharge calibration curve is reset, then then it will last for 4 hours for the load I run on the device.
I really love EcoFlows software, but this device has been a giant disappointment for using it as a UPS especially for networking gear. Do not waste your money on this. I've wasted too much of my life dealing with Ecoflow support and having them screw me. I'd wait for the River 4 Plus and wait for some reviews first before I would buy anything from Ecoflow to use as a UPS.
I would cancel your order as fast as you can, just a heads up so that you don't have to deal with all the pain and suffer I did.

In for 1 for the primary use as a UPS for my Synology DS920+, Netgear CM3000 modem, and Netgear RS300 router. Total draw is roughly 60-80 watts so this will provide an estimated 3.5 - 4 hour runtime incase anyone is looking to do a similar UPS set up. Good peace of mind buying from Costco since it should also be exempt from the 90-day electronics return policy (classified as generator so basically lifetime). Also includes EcoFlow's 5 year warranty on the power station (2 years on the power banks).

The River 3 Plus bundle stands out as a compact UPS and backup power station for home networking gear, desktops, and small server setups. It can deliver around 3.5 to 4 hours for a 60 to 80 watt load, and the 10 millisecond UPS failover is praised for keeping power blips invisible. Costco adds a strong warranty and return policy, while the extra power bank is useful for some and less valuable for others. The main caveat is that UPS behavior is not fully plug and play, with firmware updates, calibration, and USB shutdown setup requiring attention. It is a practical option if you want portable backup power and can live with some management.

Common Questions (5)

  • It can keep devices running through outages and has a 10ms UPS failover on the River 3 Plus version, but plug-and-play NAS shutdown support does not work. USB shutdown requires a NUT server setup, and some users report firmware updates or calibration cycles can interrupt AC output, so it is better suited to tinkered setups than critical out-of-the-box UPS use.

    userbeavisRikBAhchuuFoRealz8

  • The Costco bundle includes two 5000mAh Fast Power Banks, while the eBay refurb includes one, so the bundle is better if you want the extra battery pack. The Costco purchase also comes with Costco's return policy and the EcoFlow warranty, while the refurb has been seen around $150-$159.

    tenderidolTiltJunkieslipperybargainsmanbriballdo

  • Firmware updates can reboot the unit and may shut off AC output, so they need to be planned around if the device is powering critical gear. EcoFlow support also recommends a full charge and discharge cycle about once per month to keep the battery gauge calibrated.

    RikBAhchuuTidalWaveOneuserbeavis

  • The extra battery pack can be useful if you want more runtime, but it adds little value for shoppers who already own power banks or do not need the extra capacity. Some also note a high-pitched whine when the power bank is installed.

    tenderidolslipperybargainsmanbriballdo

  • A 60-80W load is estimated at about 3.5 to 4 hours, and one PC setup showed about 65W with roughly 3 hours 48 minutes remaining at 95% charge. That makes it practical for short outages on a modem, router, NAS, or desktop.

Refurb was $159 on eBay; ecoflow refurbs from ecoflow are pretty good.

Does this just stay on all the time to act like an ups? I have an ups but needs new batteries. I'm thinking about a setup of network equipment to old ups to ecoflow. But I thought you had to turn on the ecoflow. What's it parasitic draw? I hate how all the ups still use lead acid when lipo actually has longevity.

I'm using one of these that I got from the $159 eBay refurb back in January - the version without the extra power packs. The main reason I was looking was to replace a failing CyberPower UPS. I've used the common APC, CyberPower, etc UPS for decades and thought it was time to at least try something different. So, it's been an experiment and so far, I've been very happy to the point that I'm considering this idea for all future UPS replacements at my house, of which I have many. I have it running my desktop PC and I've had multiple power failures and power blinks and it's failed over perfectly every time. It does have a USB connection to manage power down of your PC but I've never had an outage last long enough to see if that works. You must get the River 3 plus version for the 10ms UPS fail time. I don't think I'd risk any higher than that. I haven't checked parasitic draw but my house has solar and I look at my whole house usage almost daily and I've not noticed a change. In fact, I just pulled the plug out, while I'm using it on this PC, it failed over without a blip, and I see almost no change in my real-time whole house power usage (the precision is 1/10 kW so I'm not going to see a few watts change). Meanwhile, the Ecoflow phone app is showing I'm using about 65w for this PC with an estimated remaining run time of 3hr 48min at 95% remaining. I also checked with the PC app, after I plugged it back in and it charged back the app shows the input power is the same as the output power.

I've had 3 of these deployed for just over a year now. 1 is on a server PC, 1 on a synology nas and 1 on a ubiquiti rack. Once you turn them on, they just stay on, and in the app you can't set a charge limit to whatever % you want (I do 80%). Once they are charged they just passthrough AC and if they die completely in an outage they will turn everything back on when they power back up.The biggest downsides are manual firmware updates cause the device to turn off and reboot so you have to plan around that before you hit update, the USB connection for initiating shutdown doesn't work on the NAS, and there's no software schedule to discharge and recharge the batteries automatically. All that being said I've had the power going out for less than 1 hour multiple times and these things held strong. I used to have two APC UPS running everything but I got sick of those saying they had 1 hour of runtime, then the power went out and they'd shut down in 1 minute and I'd be ordering new batteries again.

Better, but still not competitive. There have been deals posted at around 0.25 KWh, and this is closer to $0.70. I'm guessing that the last thing most SDers need is more power banks, so that adds little value IMO.

The last time this deal came up, I didn't buy it because of the issues mentioned here: https://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=182997849&postcount=27 Are you guys doing the full charge and discharge cycle regularly? If I get this I'd only want to do the firmware update and battery cycle once a year or less.
