Remote Travel: The inReach uses the commercial Iridium satellite network, offering true global coverage, whereas the iPhone only works in select regions.

Long Expeditions: An inReach lasts for days on a single charge. In contrast, sending messages and running GPS navigation on your iPhone will drain its battery fast.

Dedicated Emergency Response: Triggering an SOS on the inReach routes directly to the Garmin Response Center (a 24/7 global coordination center), which is optimized for wilderness search and rescue.

Rugged Reliability: The inReach is designed to withstand extreme drops, weather, and water, whereas a damaged iPhone cannot be relied upon in an emergency.

Active Tracking: inReach devices can automatically broadcast your trail breadcrumbs via MapShare so family back home can track your progress in real-time.

So yeah, no serious backpacker is going to rely on an IPhone.

Are these basically as good as satellite phones for communication between two people?

Weird how $250 things like this can exist in people's pockets yet a plane can vanish out of thin air with nobody knowing where it exists on the planet.
Try dropping one of these into the ocean and report back on the GPS signal it gets.

Are these even worth it anymore now that iphones can use satellite connection to make emergency calls/text? I remember looking into them before iphones got the functionality but now I'm not sure they're worth it anymore?

TLDR: you can suspend your plan for up to 12 months. Basic plan is around $8/month and goes up either with more messages/tracking or higher tiers with more freebies.

Source: the link and my brother and I have had these for years and they are extra peace of mind in the woods.

All true but I would argue that it depends on degree of seriousness. iPhone works perfectly fine for 99% of the situations most folks will find themselves and it does not require to purchase additional device or paying for monthly service. If there was no monthly service I would seriously consider it.

You don't even need any device in an emergency. Just scream for help. Oh, maybe won't work. Same with using an iphone.
