These movements can be temperamental. I've heard you should never wind a GL224.

i have a GL224, it's literally just an off the shelf ETA 2824-2 with decorated logo rotor.

there was one dude on WUS that really pushed this narrative, but there's no evidence other than he had a bad experience... but it actually comes up as one of the first results for GL224. https://www.watchuseek.com/thread...r.5502393/

But if you read the thread, it's a lot of people calling him an idiot: Good lord man, let it go! Are you going to start a new thread every other day on this subject?

This isn't a $1500 watch, but $360 is a great price for a nice entry-level Swiss automatic.

You can get it for the same price directly from the Glycinewatches.com website - at least for the GL0185.

I would jump on it if they make a 37-38mm

Its funny cuz when I first started collecting watches, I only liked 40-42mm...now its 36-39mm (coming full circle).

I post about glycine occasionally to relay my experience and some misconceptions

First of all, the reliability and service response on mine was absolutely abysmal. I was literally told by their repair headquarters that the watches were built to be tossed on a bed. The repair struggle under warranty really burned me, just to have their repair fail in exactly the same way shortly after.

Secondly, and possibly related, Glycine is now owned by Invicta. Buyer beware.

Not trying to diss on anyone who loves them. I just think there are a VAST number of better choices. Glycine is barely a shadow of their former self.

This is one of my favorite threads on watch seek. But I believe there is some truth to that. The Glycine GL224 watch movement is a re-branded and slightly decorated version of the Sellita SW200-1. Historically, before 2021, Glycine used the ETA 2824-2. The Sellita SW200-1 was explicitly designed as a clone of the ETA 2824-2. One of the winding wheels can break its teeth, and this especially happens when the watch is hand wound. The manual winding mechanism in this movement is robust but prone to friction and stress on specific gears (the crown wheel and ratchet wheel). You will often notice a distinct resistance or "grittiness" when winding an ETA or Sellita clone by hand, which is a clear indicator of the stress being applied to the gears. In my opinion, I would recommend some gentle rotations for 15 to 30 seconds to get these watches moving from a dead stop instead of winding.

I am not as familiar with Glycine brand, but there is a lot of competition in this price bracket. Amongst Japanese made watches, Seiko and Citizen have many models in this price bracket. Amongst Swiss watches, several Swatch group brands like Tissot, Certina and Mido have watches with the Powermatic 80 movement that goes on sale for under $500.

Love Glycine Combat Subs. Very underrated watch. Quality materials, fit and finish. Honestly, for this price you can go wrong. Don't let the Invicta ownership stigma stop you. Nice watch.

These don't always come with ETA. Some have Sellita. If it's an ETA 2824-2, it will have and state 25 jewels. If your watch has the Sellita caliber SW200-1, it will have 26.

For $360 I'd get the gray GL0419. Comes with the Selitta SW200-1.
