Ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential is a budget Wi Fi thermostat that stands out for easy app and web control, a natural touchscreen interface, and solid compatibility with central AC and hydronic baseboards. The current deal looks especially strong at this price, with checkout discounts sometimes dropping it into the mid 30 dollar range. It also works well with remote sensors and can be a handy backup or cabin thermostat. Main caveats are the need for a C wire or adapter, limited support for dual stage or 2 stage systems, and occasional temperature or humidity accuracy complaints.

Common Questions (5)

  • Several shoppers prefer ecobee's touchscreen UI, options, and remote control features over Nest, and one user said it was a clear upgrade from an Alexa smart thermostat. A caveat is that some features, like door-sensor-based shutoff, may require a subscription.

  • Yes, the page can show extra discounts only at checkout, including 15% off and sometimes 40% off. One checkout total in California came to $35.28 after those discounts and tax, but another checkout showed only the 15% off.

  • Yes, it requires a C-wire for installation. If your HVAC setup does not already have one, you may need an adapter or have an HVAC tech run wiring from the furnace.

  • No, the Essentials model does not support 2-stage gas heating or dual HVAC. The Premium model is the ecobee version mentioned as handling dual HVAC instead.

  • No, used Amazon Resale units generally do not include a manufacturer warranty. They are covered by Amazon's 30-day return policy instead, so it is smart to test the thermostat before the return window closes.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

I liked Ecobee, until they moved the basic feature of linking a door sensor to shut off heat/cool to a SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE
I paid them for the thermostat, i paid them for the door sensor, why should i pay monthly for the privilege of using them together?

Is it possible to jailbreak it and use it without hooking up with HVAC? I am looking for a solution to control room temperature using alternate AC which I control using HA.

Got one - This has to be the cheapest (reputable) wifi thermostat price I have seen, even for used. Been trying to find a cheapo wifi option so that I can set our cabin's AC/heat to be comfortable when we arrive there, instead of sweating for an hour or two once we get there.

Nevada Energy installed these for free in my home last year. I have 4 zones, including one in the garage. I control them mostly from my iPad. Very happy with them. Except - last night I turned on the AC for the bedroom from my iPad as I was sitting in another part of the house, it went on, and then about 5 minutes later turned off. When I went to the app again, it had a message that it detected no one was home. That was a new one for me. I deleted the message and it started up again. We don't program these, just turn them on or off as needed.

After seeing this comment I canceled my Used-Acceptable and picked up a Like-New for $4 more. Thanks!

Also, this purchase is for a 2nd unit. We have another Ecobee for our primary unit and its great!

Any reason to replace a working Sensi Touch (1st Version) with this model? Smallish house around 1400 SF, single floor, no remote sensors.

My Ecobee 3 lite came with an adapter you could use instead of the C wire. But I wired my own C wire. The cable already had an unused wire I was able to use for this. I do like the Ecobee with the use of my Ecobee remote temperature sensors. I don't really like the geofence option because it doesn't have an option to return to a previous override setting when you return, plus, if I just reboot my phone, the geofence triggers. But I like it pretty well other than that. But the remote sensors are a must for me.
