Normally, I'd agree- but if you don't print like every week or two the economy tank heads can dry out. For me and my family we're sporadic and not regularly printing.

If you aren't printing weekly this isn't the printer for you to begin with. Just go with a basic one.

I have long periods of printing inactivity. Then occasional short periods of intense use. Since 2017, I've had a Brother MFC-6935DW and it still works. Some months thousands of sheets printed, in the summer 0. It still works and uses very inexpensive 3rd party ink. When it dies, I'll likely prefer a similar Brother MFC-69xx printer. 9 years is a decent run, 3rd party ink did not violate the warranty.

I own both: this one and Epson EcoTank ET-2988. This printer far surpasses the EcoTank in terms of printing speed, scanning, copying, etc. Furthermore, the materials it's made of are of better quality than the Epson EcoTank; I find the Epson EcoTank components, including the top cover, to be very thin and fragile. Both printers accept generic cartridges without any issues.

Do you pry the cartridges open and bleed them into the ecotank?

They were great for their time.
Pay the extra $50 and get the EcoTank. Yes aftermarket cartridge standards are coming. But it'll be 3-5 more years.
