I got a full 40%. Is this only for sold and shipped by Amazon items?
Looks like it:
Add eligible products from Amazon.com to your shopping cart and get 40% off, up to $40. To redeem the full value of the promotional offer, add eligible products totaling at least $100 to your shopping cart.

I have "Get 40% off (up to $40) eligible products¹ when using a minimum of 1,429 Membership Rewards points."
At 40%, this is probably worth it. But for 15%, at the common valuation of MR points being worth ~2 cents each, it's probably not.
Here's why:
  • 1429 points = $29 worth of points
  • But the Amex/Amazon value = $10, because you only get 0.7 cents per point when using MR on Amazon.
  • So you're basically losing ~$19 worth of value by using 1429 points here (1429 * (0.02-0.007) = 18.57)
Given this, I'd argue that anything less than $19 off is basically losing money, so a "20% off up to $20" is pretty much the breakeven point here.
Also, using amazon visa with amazon prime gives 5-6% back. You will also lose that.

Thx OP.
Out of my 10 accounts, 3 with 40%, 3 with 15%.
The best part is that 3rd party seller is eligible as well. Planning to buy some Gundam kits.

Where can you get 2 cents per point for Amex MR?
Transferring MR points (usually 1:1) to airline and hotel partners. This is especially true with business-class or first-class flight redemptions.
For instance, transferring 75K MR points to ANA for a $4000 flight = 5.3 cents per point. That might seem extreme, but I've done that (and much better) quite a few times.

That doesn't mean 1429 points = $29 worth of points for regular purchases or purchases on Amazon.

What sort of Amex credit cards are normally getting these offers? Any free cards or mostly with a annual fee? I don't have a Amex cc yet so looking to get one now
