It's good, but not as good as it was before it was sold to the Kingsford division of Hidden Valley Ranch, which, by the way, is actually owned by Clorox (Quite an odd marriage). Hidden Valley has owned it for a long time now.

In the late 80s I lived in Kansas City for a couple of years. Coming from the Northeast it was my baptism into real BBQ. The local KC BBQ like Gates and Arthur Bryant blew my mind. Gates is my overall favorite and I still make the Gates copycat recipe that Ollie Gates was so kind to reveal to Martha Stewart https://www.marthastewart.com/340...ecue-sauce That said, KC Masterpiece was the first sauce I loved in KC. It was so different (and sweeter) than anything else on the shelf. Though, back then I'm pretty sure corn syrup wasn't one of the ingredients. It still has the basic flavor today, even with corn syrup. Anyone that mocks KC Masterpiece fails to understand how important they were to KC style BBQ, and how many brands were influenced by it. A lot.

It's a "rollback" so it should be available at this price for some time. I'll definitely be picking one up on my next trip to Walmart.

I've settled on this as my regular brand, as it's readily available and a decent value at regular price, which was $3.98 the last time I purchased at Walmart with my grocery pickup. The 40 ounce bottle is the perfect size for my usage. These don't have a dispenser cap, so I use one from an empty bottle of Nature Nate's honey, which fits perfectly.

Thanks for sharing the recipe link.

This has been my go-to BBQ sauce for a while now. I am not into sweet bbq sauces and this one kind of hits all the right checkmarks. Pretty good tasting bbq sauce and is probably the cheapest in its category. I use it for my sloppy joe sauce for sloppy joes. For this flavor and quality it is probably the best bang 4 buck. You cant find many good bbq sauces for this size under $3.50 so... not a bad deal. I ordered a few for pickeup. Thanks for heads up.

Thanks for the link!

The high fructose corn syrup makes this product a no-go for my family.

Different topic but anyone knows why BBQ sauce getting more popular than steak sauce recently? No more A-1 sauce in Costco and few deals on groceries near my area.

A lot of people don't want corn syrup. Fortunately, there are a lot of brands making corn syrup free versions of their sauce, just like ketchup these days. KC Masterpiece makes a version for restaurant use called "Premium Blend" https://www.hiddenvalleykitchens....cue-sauce/ -Real Sugar -No High Fructose Corn Syrup -No Artificial Flavors or Colors -No Preservatives -Gluten Free. Unfortunately, only available by the gallon. If it's good enough for restaurants I don't know why they don't offer it for consumers as a "premium sauce". It is available on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074SL7GCF and at $31.29 per gallon (with max S&S) I'm giving it a shot. It's grilling season!

I should mention that Gates BBQ sauce is different than sweet sauces because although it has a lot of sugar in it, it's still a more savory sauce. It's not super sweet like Sweet Baby Rays. There are several flavors that stand out, but the cumin, cayenne, celery seed, and smoke flavoring transform what was ketchup into BBQ sauce. The cayenne not only adds flavor but gives it a necessary kick too, so not a great sauce for little kids or people that don't like heat. Every ingredient has a role in the recipe. I guess you could make it more/less hot/sweeter/salty, but they all have a role in the flavor so I wouldn't change anything till you try it. I couldn't believe how a few spices could transform ketchup that easily.

One thing that I do blame KC Masterpiece for...their commercial. That old KC Masterpiece commercial where they took a shot at brands like Gates saying about Masterpiece "this ain't no gussied up ketchup" implying that's what the others were. Because of that commercial I always avoided using ketchup when making my own sauces. That was a mistake, it turns out I love "gussied-up ketchup" like Gates. The copycat Gates recipe is my go to for pulled pork.
