Both? The his same config on Apple's Website runs $200 more and apparently BestBuy and Microcenter don't even offer this configuration (I was looking on BestBuy to see for a possible price match). BestBuy doesn't offer the 32gb for M5 at all it's seems, and Microcenter only has 15" with 32gb (about $250 more than this offering). So this seems like a pretty rare config outside of Apple's Website and it's $200 cheaper. So seems like a pretty solid deal for this model.

This MacBook Air deal stands out for the rare 32GB M5 configuration, which is hard to find outside Apple and comes in well below Apple's price. The extra memory is the main draw here, especially for heavy multitasking and local AI workloads, and the Air still gets praise as one of Apple's best-built laptops in years. The main caveat is value, since education pricing, Costco bundles, and occasional open box or special order options can land closer. A strong pick if this exact memory tier matters.

  • The 32GB RAM M5 configuration appears rare outside Apple's site, which makes the B&H pricing look notably lower than common alternatives.

    ariusvideo

  • The deal can stack with an Amex offer after a price match to ABT, which can add an extra $125 off.

    bobdelt

  • The 32GB RAM model can support running larger local LLM workloads, including Qwen3.6 27B with quantization.

    Aznline

  • The passively cooled MacBook Air can still be used for dense and mixture-of-experts model loading efficiently on Apple Silicon.

    XperTeeZ

  • The passively cooled MacBook Air may throttle thermally when running local LLMs for sustained workloads.

    aragorn2000

  • The 32GB RAM configuration may be unnecessary for some buyers because 16GB can feel sufficient for everyday performance.

    FAL

  • The price advantage over education pricing is small, with the deal reportedly only about $80 cheaper than education pricing.

  • Using a Payboo credit card to save sales tax can come with a very high APR interest rate.

Price matched to ABT to get the Amex offer, additional $125 off.
What's ABT? Reward offer?

At Microcenter you can order any config you want and get a 10% discount normally (or 15% today ... not sure how long that deal will last.)

No idea if BestBuy also supports custom configs, but you can ask ...
I got 32GB/1TB open box for $1300 a few weeks ago from Microcenter.

32GB RAM allows you to run the dense Qwen3.6 27B model (needs to be quantized). Crazy to think you can run frontier level models from half year ago on a $1400 machine
You can actually run a qwen3.5-35b-a3b MoE model even better. Stupid fast mixture of experts with only 3b active parameters, at 4bit quantized only need ~20-22gb to load into memory. But apple silicon is so fast on anything, dense or MoE. Today regular PCs are fine bc new models, MoE for example, can run on regular cpu fine. But now you have new age models like gemma4 e2b a 2 billion parameter beast that has native thinking and reasoning, tool calling, function calling, json parsing, multi-modal, multi-lingual (130+ languages?), and so on, all in a 2b model. Models today are as good as the original trillion parameter frontier models, and you can get distilled versions of frontier models in tiny param if you want frontier quality.

Where? Best Buy or Microcenter? Can you provide the link? The only thing I'm seeing when I search are M4 models with 32gb of RAM. I would personally love to order one myself (assuming you're referring to Best Buy. If Microcenter, I know stock for them will likely vary based on location - none with that spec here in Houston)
I think you can get that price from Apple if you know someone that is an Apple Employee and give you a friends and family discount. That poster just wants to make it seem like this is not a deal. I think saving $200 for these higher RAM configuration is nice.

I hear that the passively cooled Macbook Air is not ideal for running local LLMs due to thermal throttling.

I'd like to find a deal on this with the 2TB, or a 15" with 2TB.

I have to say that these are the best quality machines Apple has put out since the 15" PB Titanium.

32gb m5 air is pointless config since the 16gb is so good.

You only feel the difference with m5 pro, 32gb, fan

A similar microsoft surface laptop (13.8", 32gb, 1tb, snapdragon x elite, from 2024!) would cost $1900, $400 more! Crazy.
