So is some more storage and RAM the only upgrade?
Faster CPU and gigabit Ethernet. It's substantially quicker than the Chromecast with Google TV which was been getting slower with every update.

Only 1Gb ram difference with the Plus. Not a big deal. A $8 LAN gigabit card for chromecast will work with it (highly recommended)
It's not just the ram. The processor is faster for the new model and seems to make a difference as well.

Initially I got Gold from an offer where you signup for the Google One plan, which gave a discount on Pixel phones. It was an instant upgrade for around $20. Once you're Gold though you get more points from the weekly points drop, and you can do the free games for more points. Then when you hit Platinum it's kind of on autopilot and I haven't really bought anything this year, but the weekly point drops are so high I'm just about $10 away from another year of Platinum. So it's more about just being consistent than about spending money.
Also, if anyone's looking to trade a $5 GC (Amazon) for the $60 code it looks like I won't be using mine like I had thought. 🙂
Edit: code has been traded.

Only $50 off for me. Got it to see if it's a good replacement for my onn 4k plus. There's a weird bug in my onn where sometimes the audio is delayed and requires a power off and on to fix. Hoping the Google one fixes that. Oh and when I tried to watch that new Punisher movie on Disney+, the frame rate seemed off but was fine on my TV's built in Disney+ app. And if the wired network helps me stream faster from my NAS, even better.

You need 600 points annually to keep gold status. Unless you are averaging 12 points weekly, you can't keep Gold status, which is very unlikely as most weeks you end up with only 4 to 6 points
There are also offers usually to earn x points for trying out a game that pop up regularly. Most of those are 5 to 10 points, but they add up.
Once you hit silver/gold, getting 12-14 to maintain status isn't too difficult. I also have a subscription for a game so I earn a few points from that.
Gold is also a free perk if you have Google One on the 2TB plan or higher.

I haven't spent a dime this year yet and I only need 139 more points to maintain gold status for next year. I did get lucky getting 100 points on Friday's perk redeem once or twice.
