Product Details:
  • Darren Aronofsky follows up on his critically acclaimed Pi with this grim fable about drugs and addiction. Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn) is a bored and lonely widow who kills time watching infomercials and eating chocolate in her small Coney Island apartment. One day she receives a phone call telling her that she might have the opportunity to appear on her favorite TV game show. Beside herself with anticipation, she frets over her chocolate-induced weight and vows to return to her former svelte figure. With the help of a less than reputable doctor, Sara is soon on a steady regimen of uppers. Meanwhile, her deadbeat son Harry (Jared Leto) aims for his shot at quick success along with his buddy Tyrone (Marlon Wayans) by selling heroin on the street. Harry and his girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) squirrel away dough so that they can open a boutique that will showcase her fashion designs. When drug deals go bad and the money starts to dry up, the three siphon off their wares for their own habits. At the same time, Sara descends further and further into a popper-induced psychosis. By the film's grisly climax, limbs are lopped off, flesh is pedaled, and electroshock therapy is administered. This film was screened at the 2000 Cannes and Toronto film festivals.

Community Reviews

Requiem for a Dream is a brutally intense addiction drama that lands hard through its raw story, strong theme, sound, and striking visuals. The film is praised for showing how addiction spirals and for leaving a lasting visceral impact, especially in this 4K presentation. It is also widely described as deeply uncomfortable, disturbing, and not something to revisit often. A strong pick for viewers who want an unforgettable, hard hitting watch rather than an easy rewatch.

Common Questions (3)

  • No. It is widely described as an uncomfortable, disturbing watch with a strong visceral impact, and several comments warn that it can linger in your head afterward.

  • Yes. The film is described as an excellent, raw depiction of how addiction spirals and what it feels like to be an addict, but the portrayal is also called beyond f'ed up and emotionally hard to revisit.

  • It can make more sense as a one-time watch than a repeat-viewing title. One comment explicitly recommends renting it, watching it once, and not revisiting it, because the experience is so intense.

Why anyone would want to see this movie multiple times, much less own it is beyond me
I was coming here to ask the same question. Next they'll have Precious in UHD and 3D.

Yeah... I'm not watching a second time, but I don't regret watching it once. Only movie I really regret watching was Eraserhead. After watching Eraserhead, I avoid watching any movie that people say is "disturbing". I avoided A Serbian Film and The Human Centipede.

Oddly enough It's my favorite movie. I have seen it at least 10 times. I do have trouble finding people to watch it with. I used to work at a video store and of all the movies I've ever seen, nothing has felt so raw.

If you believe in IMDB ratings it is usually bounces around in the 80s of top 100 movies of all time.

I always considered art to be good if it makes you feel something. This made me feel something, but it's something I don't want to feel again.

You might like Candy with Heath Ledger if you haven't seen it already. Less surreal, almost as bleak, but more realistic IMO.

I love this movie and yet wont watch it again. The mom character breaks me heart. When she broke down talking to her son...made me cry. She should have won awards for that role
