These SafeRacks overhead garage racks are praised as a sturdy way to reclaim floor space and store bulky or rarely used items above the garage door or workbench. The 4 by 8 size, adjustable drop range, and beefy construction make them useful for plywood, bins, tents, and other heavy gear, and the current $200 two pack is repeatedly described as a strong price versus past sales. Installation is doable for handy DIYers, but it takes careful measuring, stud finding, and patience, and some orders arrived with packaging damage or quantity confusion. A solid garage storage upgrade if you can handle the install and checkout details.

  • DIY installation can be completed in an afternoon with planning, the right tools, and careful measurement.

  • The racks can hold a lot of weight and feel beefy for garage storage needs.

  • The racks can help clear garage floor space and enable parking both cars inside year-round.

  • SafeRacks support can reinforce a mount into more studs without charging again after a mount pulls away.

  • Some orders can receive only a single rack instead of the advertised 2-pack, creating return or dispute friction.

  • Installation can take significant time and effort due to truss finding, ladder fit, and slow alignment work.

  • The shipment packaging can arrive with the box fallen apart, leading to scuffing or abrasion on steel beams.

  • Installer quality risk can exist because installer identity and reviews may not be visible before paying.

These are great. As others have said we've had them installed for 4 or 5 years and we've had no issues. They were kind of a pain to install, but that wasn't due to the product - was just hard to find the trusses for whatever reason, and my ladder was a few inches too short to make it comfortable lol.

Either way, if you need more storage in your garage, these are definitely the way to go.

Grabbed a pair. Tips for install? I have a drill and basic tools. I do not own any kind of impact wrench/driver or magnets. I read over the instructions and it seems like the best way to do this and ensure you're in the center of the stud is to use a stud finder to locate the joist, possibly a magnet to find the nails and ensure you're centered, then draw a line from one nail to the next. To be extra safe I was thinking of hammering a small nail into the drywall to triple check where the joist ends.

Great price! I bought these each for $150 this time last year. I installed them myself but it took lots of patience and up and down on the ladder. Get yourself a good stud finder that shows the entire width of the stud at once, and a long nail to poke through for good measure.

I have a similar product in my garage (mine were from Menards, but I think they've been discontinued). Not sure if the Costco does the same, but I was able to arrange one of my kits as two 2x8 sections to go over our 16' wide garage door.

Also, remember that you are installing these on the trusses that are holding up your roof (that already weighs tons) so the racks are best installed at the perimeter of the garage, and you don't want to push the weight limits too much.

Yeah, you're going to have to post proof of that.
Don't worry, he/she won't as they are just trolling. This is actually a really good deal for the SafeRacks.

What do people generally charge to install these? The SafeRacks site itself shows their installers will charge $149/rack to install if providing your own. That seems a bit high.
It's for peace of mind. Also depends on the value you put on your time. Worth it if you ask me to know it's installed correctly. Though I did it in my own, I had to go very slowly, quadruple check all my measurements, and lots of my time going up and down ladders. It can be done in an afternoon but only if you plan it well out and have the right tools.

I thought about paying but you can't see who the installer is, reviews, or experience. Read some horror stories about these installers. Some are obviously great but there's a risk there.

Just a heads up, you can still order if you don't have a membership! They just add a 5% surcharge (in this case, $10) during checkout. Even with that though, this is still a great price Smilie

I went through SafeRacks and paid $250 for two racks installed about 5 years ago. Last year, one of the mounts started pulling away from the stud/drywall (we have an oddly-shaped garage ceiling that varies from 12-20' height). I sent SafeRacks an e-mail, and they sent out the same installer. He reinforced the mount into more studs, and I wasn't charged a dime.

What drop down would you recommend? Probably the shorter?
Get the longer and you can adjust to fit. I just overlap the drops with screws. Works just fine. I generally measure my tallest box and add a few holes.

How are you all installing it? I was quoted $300+ for installation
It's easy to install. Measure your joists. Prep the hole. That's what she said. Impact drive lags. Done.

The previous owner left the top most horizontal bar drilled in

1) How do I know whether they are compatible with these?
2) If they are compatible, how long will the installation take for one person?

Nice.

FWIW for others reading, if you have access to the attic space above & intend to load up the racks with a lot of weight, you're better off just drilling straight through the 2x4 or 2x6 roof truss member and using a bolt & washer vs the supplied lag screws. Lag screws are probably fine though if you aren't going to put anywhere near max weight on these.

Im assuming he was thinking of these - https://slickdeals.net/f/17507718

Which really is night and day price-wise. The quality of Gladiator products are good, so I really don't see that big of a price jump for the Costco version.
