This rubber mat is mainly valued as a heavy, durable surface for garages, home gyms, ramps, and outdoor areas, with the flat side often used up and the textured underside helping with drainage and grip. It is praised for being comfortable underfoot, easy to hose off, and much cheaper than similar mats at Home Depot or Lowe's. The main drawbacks are inconsistent cuts and sizing that can leave gaps, plus the 1/2 inch thickness is not ideal for dropped weights. It can also be heavy to move, may smell at first, and may leave marks on floors.

  • Indoor spaces where odor or rubber residue is a concern, because the mats can smell strongly and may leave spots or shed bits.

  • Buyers covering a large area with multiple pieces, because inconsistent cuts can leave noticeable gaps between mats.

  • Lifters dropping iron plates or dumbbells, because the 1/2-inch thickness can't absorb dropped weight safely.

  • People needing a soft, cushioned surface for falls, because these mats are hard and provide less cushioning than foam puzzle flooring.

It's made out of recycled tire rubber.
I wouldn't want this in my house, esp. not anywhere kids might be.

If using for a home gym. Better to get 3/4 inch (not 1/2 inch).

Reason is because you can drop iron plates and iron dumbbells on 3/4 rubber mats, and won't do any harm to the floor. Mats that are 1/2 can't take dropping weight, you will have to more gently place the weight on the floor, not drop. And even if you plan to place them gently, accidents happen and weight gets dropped on the floor.
Or you can buy plates meant to be dropped.... bumper plates! Bumper plates are cheaper these days as well.

You think the rubber in tires is exactly the same as the rubber in "rubber balls, rubber erasers, rubber bands any sort of rubber! Your kidding right?"

Not worth discussing with you, as I'm sure your mind is made up.
But in case others are interested (plenty of more in-depth info out there as well)

Tires are made up of a complex blend of different rubbers – natural and synthetic – plus a whole list of other construction materials. On average, a modern passenger car tire will contain up to 25 components and as many as 12 different rubber compounds. It all starts with natural rubber extracted from special trees grown in large plantations. This liquid (latex) coagulates with acid, is cleaned with water and pressed into blocks.

Synthetic rubber, meanwhile, is created in a separate process using a mix of chemicals in the laboratory. During the manufacturing stage, blocks (both natural and synthetic) are cut up, weighed and mixed with other ingredients.

Tires contain a number of trace toxic chemicals including heavy metals and chemical agents used to increase the durability of the tires.[2] These typically include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, benzothiazoles, isoprene and heavy metals such as zinc and lead.

park playgrounds are made with recycled tire rubber. The world has trace toxic materials in it. The air has trace toxic minerals in it...... I just feel sorry for your kids they are never getting a hot wheels or bicycle they could skin their knee ROFL Nope it isn't all exactly the same but it has one thing in common, I am not afraid of any of it! The keyword you posted is contains TRACE amounts of toxic materials, are your kids on the spectrum where they would be eating the rubber mats?
OMG did you know that cars also have rubber tires on them and that rubber flakes off onto the roadway and sidewalks on your streets? OMFG you better never take your kid for a walk on a sidewalk or put them in your car for a drive......... THE HORROR OF IT ALL DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

Pretty great price and look nice for a home gym, a little smaller and thinner than the goat Tractor supply horse stall mats but still pretty nice overall.
Have them, would not recommend for home gym

they used to make parkmplaygroinds out of recycled tires until the issues were found. now they make them lit of non toxic compounds. almost like when we find out something os a problem we correct it.

Do you think they would work on a concrete driveway with a slight incline? I'd like to use as an oil mat for a vehicle with a very small oil leak
I use these for a gym and although I wiped it down after laying out there is a few spots where it had some sort of oil or something from the original purchase. I got much out but still feel it there. Those spots may make your feet slide but nothing crazy but just thought you should know. That's on the flat side facing up. The bottom has different round patterns that liquid can run pass. As mention above from user 3point14. The circles are about the size of a quarter coin. The mats itself have a good grip. I placed these on top of tile and they do slide if not weighted down but I'm sure on concrete it will do just fine. I deadlift with rubber slippers and those have good grip but on those certain "spots" my foot slides a little when walking on it but nothing major. Just thought you should know if you plan to use as an oil mat have good grippy footwear even with the round side up. Hope that helps.

Not the information I came up with in my research, there was some concern back in the day that possibly maybe think there may be an issue and it is was studied and deemed safe. My guess is a company wants to sell a competing product at 2x the cost to the government is raising concerns. The info I found states rubber material is perfectly safe but great for eating so if your child is an infant ( no business anywhere unsupervised where it can put bad stuff in its mouth) don't leave it unattended! provide any facts linked that you have. https://www.cpsc.gov/s3fs-public/...8eDpKRWKBS The honest conclusion from current evidence is:
  • The honest conclusion from current evidence is:
    • There is no strong proof that playground crumb rubber causes widespread illness or cancer in children.
    • But there are also ongoing concerns because recycled tire material can contain: ( Some concerns but no evidence or proof of any harm caused)
      • heavy metals,
      • PAHs,
      • VOCs,
      • and other industrial chemicals.
Some localized testing projects found elevated lead or contaminants in older installations.
    Current practical consensus

Most public health agencies today treat modern crumb-rubber playgrounds as:
    • Probably low risk for typical use
    • but not risk-free
    • and requiring proper maintenance, drainage, cleaning, and heat management.
The bigger immediate safety risk on most playgrounds is still:
    • falls,
    • poor maintenance,
    • hard surfaces,
    • exposed concrete edges,
    • and worn-out surfacing.
    Takeaways:
  • Heavy metals yea don't eat the rubber and you will be fine, if a child is at the age where they are putting random things in their mouth you know be an adult and supervise them!!
  • VOC's it is outside so there is this thing called a breeze that makes it unlikely you can breath enough VOC to matter! Anything plastic or rubber of vinyl on the planet emits some VOC's it is a part of life!
  • PAHs, are only likely if rubber is on fire aka burning it so not a worry ! smoking, also common in urban air pollution, wood smoke, vehicle exhaust, and heavily charred food. The amount in playground rubber is usually much lower than industrial exposure levels
The bigger immediate safety risk on most playgrounds is still: and soft rubber improves safety by a huge margin vs any possible concerns damage by helping with fall protection, scrapes from hard surfaces!

https://www.epa.gov/chemical-rese...laygrounds
  • However, the EPA's exposure study generally found that:
    • most chemical releases into the air were low
    • many outdoor air levels were similar to background levels
    • metals had low bioaccessibility (little actually absorbed by the body)
    • biomonitoring did not show higher PAH exposure in turf users compared with grass-field users
So… is it safe?

The most accurate summary is:
  • Current evidence does not show a clear major health risk from normal use of tire crumb fields/playgrounds.
  • But the material is not chemically inert or completely risk-free.
  • There are still unanswered questions about:
    • long-term exposure
    • effects on children
    • indoor facilities with poorer ventilation
    • heat-related emissions
    • environmental contamination/microplastics
The EPA itself stopped short of declaring it completely safe. Their wording is more cautious: exposures appear "likely limited," but chemicals are present and exposure can occur.

Liner? a treadmill mat you mean? Yes people do this all the time. IF you are trying to make the belt then no! No idea what a liner is .
Yes, I was planning on using it as a threadmill mat. Just wasn't sure if the mat will slide since I'll need 2 pieces to cover the area of the threadmill, and not just 1 piece.
