This SABRENT 10Gbps USB C NVMe enclosure stands out as a compact, tool free clamshell design that keeps the thermal pad aligned and uses an aluminum top as the heatsink. It has handled real world file transfers, backups, and DVR use with drives like the SK hynix P31, Lexar NM790, and Samsung 970 Pro without skips or temperature trouble. Reported speeds land around 990 MB per second read and 720 MB per second write, which fits the 10Gbps limit. The main caveat is that faster 20Gbps or 40Gbps enclosures are needed for higher sustained speeds, especially with hotter drives. A practical pick for old SSDs and routine transfers.

  • The aluminum top that acts as the heat sink can support stable thermals during file-transfer use.

  • The clamshell design helps keep the thermal pad in place while closing the enclosure.

  • The enclosure can sustain full-speed backups for hours without overheating when paired with an energy-efficient NVMe drive.

  • The enclosure can deliver consistent real-world transfer speeds around 990 MB/s reads and 720 MB/s writes on USB 3.2.

  • The enclosure can overheat when large transfers run over USB-C, which can lead to throttling.

  • The 10Gbps interface limits throughput to roughly 1GB/s, so it cannot fully utilize faster PCIe NVMe speeds.

  • Sustained performance can still be limited by drive thermals and throttling even when using higher-speed USB enclosures.

  • The enclosure may not be ideal for scratch or extended read/write workloads because some reports focus on file-transfer use only.

This is just an enclosure, you place your NVMe SSD Drive in it
So a $1300 8TB SSD isn't included?!?

You have to get an energy efficient NVME drive to not overheat.

Lexar NM790 or SK Hynix Platinum P41 / Solidigm P44 Pro should be on the short list for external drives. I use this enclosure with a NM790 8TB to do full disk backups and it never overheats even while running full speed for a few hours at a time.

Also, the enclosure listed here is ABS trash with a plastic clasp. Get this enclosure instead. Aluminum shell with a brass nut + screw to secure the drive down.

Clameshell design is always better than the slide design.

This is a nice one at a low price, but keep in mind that it's 10 Gbps (so roughly 1 GByte/s) and if you want to more fully utilize your NVMe SSD's speed potential, you might consider a faster (and more expensive) 40 Gbps enclosure. Of course, the OP one is plenty for most uses and perfect for one-off data migration from an older laptop SSD and then glorified USB-stick purposes. As others mentioned, the faster you transfer data, the more heat is an issue so the 40 Gbps (and faster) enclosures need more heatsinks and increased cost.
This is complicated advice that leaves important details out. The enclosures you talk about cost 5-10x as much. And your computer must have thunderbolt 4/5. If it doesn't, you're not going faster than 10GB/s, regardless of how much you spent on in your enclosure. And the use cases for 40GB/s are pretty narrow - it's unlikely this matters to you unless you are photo or video editing directly on the external drive. And even then, you probably won't notice. Unless you're a pro: in which case you already know all of this.

If you have an old SSD you want to put in an enclosure, this one is just fine. Ignore talk that tells you to get a thunderbolt 4/5 enclosure.

I'm sure you meant to say that only the frame is ABS. The entire top that acts as the enclosures heat sink is aluminum.

True, 40 Gbps (not 40GB/s, b is bits and B is bytes) enclosures like the OWC 1M2 40G are expensive and not needed (thus safe to ignore) for most people. My main point was not to put a 7 GB/s PCIe 4.0 SSD in the OP deal and expect it to go that fast. Either know the limits for the price of the OP deal or pay more if you need the speed and have 40 Gbps USB 4 and/or Thunderbolt 4/5. Others pointed out that 20 Gbps enclosures also exist but might not have the beefy heatsink for sustained transfers of the OWC 1M2 40G I was thinking about when I made that comment.

Good points. For a 20Gbps enclosure, I really like the one I previously linked. It's only $26, has metal parts for mounting, the thermal pad is thick enough to make contact with the aluminum housing, and the pad itself is textured on one side with a kind of spongy material that lets it slide along the metal enclosure when you slide the drive tray in, but it also makes really good contact with it too. I'm really, really picky about this stuff and it's the best overall solution I've found regardless of price for 20 Gbps stuff. Very fast at around 1900 MB/s sustained writes once the SLC cache is exhausted on my Lexar NM790, and it hovers around 70°C for the entirety of the backup (100% writes) from what I can recall.

Every enclosure I tried has overheated if I push it while connected over USB-C. If I have to do a big copy, I do it over USB-A. It's slower, but never overheated that way.
Smart... and good advice.

P.S. I have a ugreen enclosure and I recently coppied about 400GB on a 512GB m.2 drive in one shoot.. no issues. But I walked away and it was a cold night... most likely low 60's.

I just picked up a second one of these. I can tell you that i see consistent reads ~ 990 MB/s and writes in the 720 MB/s with a 512gig 970 pro in the enclosure connected to a 3.2 port. I have never had a temp issue with it but my main use case is file transfer, not using it for scratch work or anything with extended r/w.

I winder if adding an extra thermal pad will help ensure no overheating. Is there even room to🤔
