Chicken of the Sea chunk light tuna stands out for cheap protein and a firmer, less mushy texture than many chunk light brands. It is also described as better for tuna sandwiches than the purée style, while still being the kind of tuna that can work as a topper or quick pantry staple. The main cautions are high sodium, mercury limits, and the fact that it is not complete nutrition for cats. A rinse can cut sodium, but the can is still best treated as a salty, occasional use item.
Common Questions (5)
It is chunk light tuna with a softer, flakier texture than premium white tuna, and it is commonly made from smaller species like skipjack. It is not the same as a puree-style product, though the texture is still softer than solid chunk tuna.
It should only be used as an occasional treat or topper, not as a meal replacement. It is high in sodium and does not provide complete nutrition for cats.
The chunk light texture is firmer than puree-style tuna, but the puree-style texture can make a better tuna fish sandwich for some recipes. Chicken of the Sea chunk light is also described as the least mushy among chunk light brands.
A common guideline is about 3 cans per week because tuna can contain mercury. That makes it better as an occasional protein source than a daily staple.
Rinsing regular canned tuna under cold water for about three minutes can reduce sodium by roughly 80%. It may also reduce some calcium, so it lowers salt at the cost of some nutrients.
