- There's no speaker/mic (so you can't answer calls on it).
- The Fenix 8 has a speaker and mic and is also currently on sale.
- Feels like Fenix 9 is imminent given the sales, but if you're new to Garmin and this is within your budget, it's a good watch.
The upgraded sensors on this watch do a much better job on providing useful accurate data when working out and for recovery. Only gripe is that the display doesnt always turn on when I flick the wrist and i sometimes need to press a button or tap the screen. Minor annoyance, but worth it to get about 10 days of solid, heavy use between charges.
FWIW, I've used Garmin fitness watches going back to about 2007 when the "watch" was like strapping on a mini tablet to your wrist and required a special USB cradle to sync with Garmin Connect desktop. I've had Forerunners, Vivoactives, Venus and now this one, and the build quality on this is excellent compared to the last 2.
The current software ecosystem is much much better, and the android Connect app works flawlessly. Did Garmin make a mistake by doing the whole Garmin+ BS? Yes. Does it impact you in anyway if you use this watch for 95% of it's intended function? No - just use it like any other Garmin watch and ignore the upsell.
Community Reviews
The Epix Pro Gen 2 is a premium Garmin AMOLED smartwatch best for workout tracking, recovery data, and all day wear. The upgraded sensors, solid build quality, and Garmin Connect app support stand out, and battery life is reported around 10 days with heavy use or about 5 days with notifications and always on display. The main tradeoffs are no speaker or microphone for calls, a display that sometimes needs a button press to wake, and concern that this older platform may stop getting new features as newer Garmin models arrive. A strong pick if you want Garmin basics in a polished package.
Common Questions (5)
It is described as no longer supported, with software updates having stopped for the Epix/Fenix 7 generation after Garmin's software-development change. That means newer feature rollouts are being directed to newer models instead.
The Fenix 8 47mm has a bigger screen and adds speaker/mic features, and the Fenix 9 is expected later this year. If those upgrades matter, waiting may make sense; if you want a lower-cost entry into Garmin now, this Epix Pro Gen 2 is still a strong option.
No. It does not have a speaker or microphone, so you cannot answer calls on the watch. If call handling matters, the Fenix 8 is the Garmin model in this thread noted as having both.
Battery life is about 10 days with heavy use for one owner, about 5 days with notifications on and the display always on, and over a week on non-AMOLED versions. Actual runtime depends heavily on always-on display and notification settings.
Yes. A Garmin certified refurbished 47mm Sapphire Edition with warranty was linked at about $399, and a black cover can be used to change the white-side look if needed.

I have had this watch on my wrist since it came out, and it has been great. With notifications on and the screen on all the time, I get about 5 days of charge. Non-AMOLED get about over a week.
