This heat-based bug bite reliever is described as a compact way to take the edge off mosquito and other insect bites by briefly replacing itch with a sharp warm sensation. The strongest takeaways are that it can feel effective, is easy to use, and some compare the technology favorably to other heat devices or even a heated spoon. The main limitation is that relief is temporary and may need repeated use, especially on more intense bites. The deal itself also appears shaky at checkout, with the promo total changing and requiring two forms of payment.

  • Local heat can significantly reduce itch and pain in a published controlled real-world study.

  • Some users find the heat device convenient for quick, temporary itch relief when symptoms return.

  • The device heats a small area to create pain that masks itch without skin damage.

  • The device can reportedly get hotter than expected while avoiding burning for some users.

  • Relief can be temporary, with some bites needing repeated use to keep itch under control.

  • The manufacturer explanation for how it works may be insufficient, leading some shoppers to call it snake oil.

  • Gnat or no-see-um bites with heavy swelling and intense itching may only get brief burning and minimal relief.

  • A checkout code issue can prevent completing an order because the cart total changes at payment.

Just use a hand warmer. Literally does the exact same thing and you get a pair instead of one. The relief is temporary at best and no indication of how long relief lasted.. That study was for a specific product and mosquito bites only.

If it works, does it really matter how/ why?? Don't be such a killjoy! Even if it's just psychosomatic, if it helps people feel better, what's the harm??
Wasted money and garbage in landfills.

I've had versions of this for years - they work and the science checks out. These get hotter than you would expect. It's hot enough to denature the irritants from insect bites but it won't burn you. I've used it on bug bites, stings and even acne. I have different brands of these but I have multiples in my house because they get used that often. They work a lot better than anything else I have ever tried.

The harm is telling people it 'breaks down the proteins' which suggests permanent relief when in actuality it just offers temporary relief that you have to keep zapping yourself over and over again to keep up. False claims harm people.

I get bad bad itch with bug bites and I have something similiar plus one of those suction device type.

Both works to help. The theory is sound in both. One to remove the chemical and the other to neutralize it. Sure, I would like to see better study on it

"This is the first published controlled real-world study of the use of concentrated heat to alleviate itch induced by insect bites or stings. The results demonstrate a significant reduction in itch and pain using local heat application after insect bites or stings, based on data derived from a large data-set with more than 12,000 registered treatments from more than 1,700 individuals."

Additionally, one of the images above from the manufacturer literally says how it works.

Doesn't sound like you know what you're talking about.
Edit: That confidently incorrect downvote. What a guy! 🤣
Yeah. I agree. I have a different version of one of these, but it works. Faster relief and not quite as long lasting as Diphenhydramine (used as a topical from Benadryl) but it is nice not to have to use chemicals.

The heat does work, just temporarily, similar to the old way of using the back of a heated spoon. The heat overloads the nerve pathways at the bite prioritizing the pain signal over the itch, and temporarily stops the local mast cells from releasing histamine to fight the bug saliva.

I have got this since it just came out. For me it just masks the itchiness with the pain and of course result doesn't last long. Im a bug magnet, for mosquitos bite that go away on its own within a day, it is ok to use for some short relief, but for gnat/ no see um bites that cause me heavy swelling and intense itching, even the stronger mode of this only give me some burning feel that kick off the itch for a minute or less
Have you tried the Benadryl gel extra strength anti itch relief? Itchy skin has plagued my entire life and this lasts awhile for me! Sometimes for the rest of the day.

He doesn't. And, anecdotally, I was a skeptic when my wife bought aversion of this kind of "itch-stopper" and reluctantly let her try it on me. Color me shocked when it actually worked.

I'm horribly allergic to mosquito bites, the bite area blows up as if someone shoved a tangerine under my skin at the bite, and it gets very hot. And of course, itches like crazy. These kinds of devices not only stop the itch, but somehow also minimize the swell.

As an aside, those with low pain tolerance(s) should avoid these products, while it's fine for my wife and I, our neighbor was nearly brought to tears at the lowest setting.

Don't know how it works, and I really don't care. Just glad that it works for me.

I believe the acting mechanism of these devices as well as the simple heated spook is to neutralize the "saliva" and proteins that mosquitos and bugs first release under our skin so that we don't feel the pain of the bite itself. Once our body reacts to those foreign proteins they area starts to itch, becomes red, etc. basically common action of our self-defense immune system. When you heat up the area those foreign proteins and secretions are supposed to coagulate (think of boiling an egg) and our immune system no longer recognizes them as the enemy and the reaction stops. Now, the key thing is to know what the right temperature is for coagulation, that is why some people report only temporary relief, some people have this once and done effect. I attest to the fact that with the hot enough spoon you can get rid of the itch after just one attempt. Having a device is convenient, but need to make sure the device heat is high enough. Thanks!

Mosquito magnet here, and I get intense itching. None of the lotions help, and not benadryl, etc. The only relief I get is from aiming the hottest water I can stand at the bite site. I was told that releases histamines, don't know if that's true. But I do get relief for a few hours this way. I try to have a bucket underneath to save the runoff water, that I then later water plants with.
It makes sense to me that a localized heat device would work. Going to give this a try.

Couple of notes from the article:
  • "The data collected do not provide insight into the sustainability of the heat treatment beyond a time period of 1 h."
  • The study was funded by Kamedi, the company that made the device used in the study.
