This is the way. Ball up some paper under. Put 50 bricks of plain standard charcoal. 'bout an inch from the top. Light it and that's it. Watch it smoke and in 15 minutes it's ready. Turn over slowly to stack into the hot side of your grill kettle. A couple of damped Mesq. or Apple wood chips optional. For steaks, hamburgers etc. Best way. No pricey starters. No fluid. No gas. No electricity. Pro.

This lights charcoal effectively, but I still recommend against it. It almost burned a hole in my kitchen counter and filled the entire house with smoke. I had to repaint several rooms.
