This countertop nugget ice maker is appealing for its small footprint, quick sonic style ice, and low price, especially in the silver finish tied to the deal. The machine is described as working well when it runs, with enough output for regular use and even parties. The main caution is durability, since similar countertop nugget makers are said to clog, need mineral buildup cleaned out, or fail within about a year or two. A longer warranty and filtered water come up as practical ways to reduce the risk, making it a tempting compact ice source if you can live with possible maintenance.

  • The ice maker can produce nugget ice after running the clean cycle following a coolant settling rest on the counter.

  • Using highly filtered water can reduce clogging and sand-like buildup that otherwise requires periodic disassembly cleaning.

  • A similar internal design from another brand reportedly keeps working for about 18 months at the ~$100 price point.

  • Some countertop nugget ice makers of this style reportedly run continuously for over two years without problems.

  • The spinner can clog and stop making ice, which can lead to replacement roughly once a year.

  • Mineral buildup can create sand-like residue that requires taking the unit apart and cleaning about yearly.

  • Warranty coverage may require paying shipping costs to send the unit in for service, which can be expensive.

  • A related Frigidaire nugget model reportedly melted plastic after 4-5 months and required shipping the unit at the buyer's expense.

Heads up. all of these Chinese nugget ice makers have about a 6 moth to a year lifespan then they break. The nugget spinner eventually gets so clogged it won't make ice anymore. just know you will be replacing it about once a year.
For $100, this wouldn't be too surprising. But - I do have one of these (different brand but looks nearly identical) and it's still going strong after 18 months. Not daily use, but used quite a bit.

Do you use bottled water with no added minerals? For example Kirkland has minerals added back. But other water from Niagara is just pure water (reverse osmosis) with nothing added back. I'm guessing the 'sand' is the mineral buildup
That is what I'm wondering. I have a cube (sheet of like 3x8 near solid ice cubes) ice maker that is a champ, and huge upgrade over my old bullet style, but has to be cleaned with a white vinegar solution monthly or the mineral deposits get crazy. Been two months without cleaning and it looks like Sandy yellow color stuff on everything... But once I run a couple cycles and rinse everything with hot water, it's fine. I use filtered fridge water fyi, not bottled.

If doing a monthly cycle of vinegar solution is a way to mitigate hard water deposits causing the mechanism to stick, I can def live with that.

Anyone to opine?

Don't buy the Frigidaire ones. I bought the EFIC2550 for my mom. She would use it to make ice on the counter then unplug after done using. It wasn't ever plugged in for more than 4hrs. After 4 or 5 months, the plastic started melting from internal heat. I called Costco because I have heard that they have a good customer service/warranty. They said it didn't cover small appliances and pointed me towards Frigidaire warranty.

Frigidaire says that the product isn't actually made by them. It's made by a company called Curtis. After several weeks of back and forth emails. They decided to replace it, but we had to ship the behemoth to them at OUR expense.

So, avoid the headache and steer clear of this model.
You were lied to. Costco's exclusion is for large appliances, not small ones, and this ice maker definitely doesn't fall under their definition of "large appliance". If you still have it you can still return it for a full refund.

I rarely utilize Costco's generous return policy, but that's just because the stuff I buy from them is usually good. I would have absolutely returned an ice maker that failed in less than a year, and I think you should too.
