The Legion Tab Gen 5 is an 8.8 inch Android gaming tablet that stands out for handheld emulation and PC game streaming or translation, with support for systems up to PS2 and many Steam, Epic, and GOG titles. The hardware also gets praise for two USB C ports, a microSD card reader, and the ability to sideload apps after a 24 hour wait. The main knocks are the high price, no fingerprint sensor, no cellular connectivity, and face unlock that only works for basic tablet unlocking. Chinese ROM versions can be switched to English and Google services, but they may receive updates more often than the US version.

  • Handheld gaming fans who want an 8-inch Android tablet, because it handles emulators up to PS2 and can run many Steam, Epic, and GOG games.

  • Portable entertainment readers who want easy unlocking and expandable storage, because it has facial unlock, dual USB-C ports, and a microSD card reader.

  • Controller-based players who use a tablet as a handheld, because 8 inches is described as the sweet spot and it pairs well with GameSir G8, Kishi V3, or abxylute S9.

  • Android power users who sideload apps, because installation from outside the Play Store is supported after a 24-hour waiting period.

  • Shoppers expecting a premium-value 8-inch tablet, because the price is described as hard to justify versus cheaper alternatives.

  • People who need fingerprint login or secure biometric app access, because it has no fingerprint sensor and facial recognition may not clear Android's secure-biometrics bar.

  • Tablet buyers who want cellular data on the go, because it has no cellular connectivity.

$700 tablet. No fingerprint sensor (read, you will be punching in your password or pattern. A lot). No cellular connectivity. I guess there might be a couple of hardcore gaming cases this product answers but I find it amusing how iPad Mini continues to be such a better value prop for the rest of us...

iOS sticks indeed and I don't enjoy it. But iPad mini has a killer screen, fingerprint sensor, and cellular connectivity - all for $300+ (barely used last gen model). Compared to this, I cannot take 8" Android tablets seriously.

Maybe once a day, then you can use facial recognition to unlock. (That's how my Gen 3 works).
That said, I agree with you that this price is not such a good value, when the Gen 3 was $387 the other day: https://slickdeals.net/f/19586553-lenovo-legion-tab-gen-3-gaming-tablet-8-8-qhd-165hz-touch-snapdragon-8-gen-3-12gb-lpddr5-256gb-ufs-386-99

Facial recognition is extremely inferior in these tablets and it doesn't clear the bar imposed by Android as secure biometrics. meaning that you can at most use it to unlock the tablet.. Any apps relying on biometric login will not be able to use it. (Same is true unfortunately for Samsung, which has much better face recognition but still not as good as Pixel's one).

The Legion Tabs are all about gaming. If you arent into gaming, they arent necessarily the best offering. However they are capable of emulating up to PS2 amd can run PC games from Steam, Epic, and GoG. They cant run everything, but compatibility of the translation layers is improving. The Gen 3 can run Indies and older AAA games. The Gen 5 can run all but the most demanding games (as long as the game/processor/gpu is supported by the translation layers).

Agreed. Unfortunately the situation with other 8" tablets is even more miserable. Alldocube comes close but no f/p sensor, no updates and no US availability lol that opportunity as well.

With the EXTRAFIVE deal, this isn't too bad for the upgraded internals, but its quite a bit pricier than the Gen 3!

Am i the minority, I prefer my electronics with no lock screen, password, or fingerprint reader. What are you trying to hide that locking the device is such a priority!

Don't even engage with people that say 'what are you hiding?' They clearly live in an echo chamber

You're paying for gaming/emulation performance with the Legion... And Android, because its more free still... I've heard that google will be locking down Android to be like Apple iOS though.
