The RG35XX 2024 is a budget Linux handheld that stands out for retro emulation and custom firmware support, with the H700 chipset and a low price making it an appealing entry point. The included microSD card is often described as usable, and Anbernic cards are sometimes praised as better than the usual bundled junk, though backing it up or replacing it with a known brand is still advised. The main tradeoffs are the confusing lineup, missing Bluetooth and larger battery versus the Plus, and comfort that can be poor for larger hands. Charging can also be finicky with modern USB C adapters, so a 5W USB A to USB C setup is often needed.

Common Questions (5)

  • The included card may be usable, and Anbernic handhelds are often shipped with better Kioxia cards than the junk commonly bundled with cheap handhelds. Even so, backing it up or cloning it to a known-brand card is still recommended in case it fails.

  • No. The RG35XX Plus came first and includes extras like Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, a larger battery, and revised shoulder buttons, while the 2024 "New RG35XX" is a cheaper H700 model that lacks some of those Plus features.

  • It is a Linux handheld, so it is well-suited for custom firmware and OS installs. GarlicOS is tied to the original 2023 RG35XX, while Knulli is a current go-to option for this H700-era lineup.

  • It does not have Bluetooth, so controller options are limited to 2.4GHz wireless. It also may not charge reliably from modern USB-C chargers and instead needs a 5W charger with a USB-A to USB-C cable.

  • It is cramped for larger hands and is better suited to kids or people with very small hands. A horizontal handheld layout is the more comfortable choice for longer sessions.

Dammit, I fell into a rabbit hole and now want the anbernic 477V instead, it's only 200 bucks more than this one. Either that or the Retroid Pocket 6.
I have 3 G350 handhelds, (I build and give them away as gifts) an Anbernic RG35xx Pro, a Konkr Pocket Fit, Anbernic RG477v, Steam Deck OLED and ROG Ally Z1E. It's embarassingly addictive to collect and configure these. I like them for for specific things like SNES, N64, PSP emulation, etc, even though the larger handhelds can easily handle everything the smaller ones can do.

The Anbernic RG 477v is the king of vertical handhelds, able to play basically all PS2 and Gamecube games. I like mine quite a bit, but in retrospect, the RG 477m might have been a better fit for me. I use a $15 grip I bought off Aliexpress to play games on my 477v, because not using it will eventually cramp up my hands.

The 35XX units generally won't charge with modern USB-C chargers. You'll need a 5W charger and USB-A to USB-C cable.

Thanks for the insight! I prefer vertical handhelds, I guess this seals the deal for me, I'll wait for a sale on the 477v instead.

Ordered one of these back in April and it never arrived; had to have it refunded a month later.

The only thing I'd recommend is one of those slide on grips for the 477v. If makes mine *so* much better to use for more than 30 minutes at a time. This is the one I've been using: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32...02256.html

I just beat Metal Gear Solid upscaled 4x, and it's one of the best ways to experience that system. I've started MGS2 on it as well. PS2 games run wonderfully with the Dimensity 8300 handhelds. 2x to 2.5x upscaling can be done with just about every game in the PS2 library. I also installed GTA4 on mine through Gamehub Lite. Anbernic really released some great handhelds with the 477m and 477v.

I would have said yesterday was a good time to buy one off Aliexpress, but the Paypal discount is now gone. ($17 off $159, $35 off $299)

There is usually a sale at the beginning of every month on Aliexpress that features a limited redemption Paypal promo just like that. Check in again on July 1st, and stack the general sale coupons with that Paypal discount for a nice price. You can also try cashback from Capital One if you have one of their cards, or "the site of which we do not speak" for less reliable cashback. Just make sure to purchase on the first day of the Paypal promo, as the redemptions are usually claimed, and the promo gone within 24 hours.

I've had a Miyoo mini and Trimui each played maybe a dozen times both get corrupted cards sitting in a drawer and windows could repair neither so they're now both useless to me. It's an absolute MUST to immediately copy the card to a new one in my experience.
Hopefully you're not saying both of those devices are useless bc the SD card dies. You can absolutely download the firmware again to a new microSD card and add games to continue using them.

Up to Dreamcast according to: https://retrocatalog.com/retro-handhelds/rg-35xx

But I've never used it for more than Nintendo DS or PS1

Did not realize the Paypal offer was recurring, thanks for the info, will check back next month. Re cash back sites, I would more emphatically recommend them as they can give pretty good rates (up to 20% on big days like 11.11). I used the oldest/most well known CB site a few days ago for 14% off. When Ali froze on checkout and the shopping trip wasn't registered, it took <2 min to submit a claim on the CB site, and <5 min after that for them to award me the credit.

Anbernic is the one to get, the cheaper ones have button feel issues and other annoyances.

Magicx Zero 40 is the best IMO. The RG DS mimics the clamshell of the original DS, but is almost double the cost.
