DC rainmaker has a good comparison https://www.dcrainmaker
I personally prefer a MIP screen for battery life and better visibility in direct sun, but for someone looking to offload navigation from their phone and get basic stats on their rides, I think you could do a lot worse than an Explore 2 for $180, especially if you're already in the Garmin ecosystem with a watch or something.
Frankly, it does 90% of what my 530 did, but has the newer interface that's easier to use with the touch screen.
The only thing I personally was missing was 30s and 60 second average power (the only data field was instant and 3s), but I installed a ConnectIQ app for that field.
That said, it doesn't have a dedicated MTB mode (off-road profile comes into Strava as Gravel) and lacks some of the MTB metrics. For me, I just recreationally ride MTB, so I don't care about any of that and the larger screen makes up for it.
Does GeoID work with Varia?
