Great headphones and I paid $300.
They are durable, I have taken these on at least 4 long haul flights a year, use them every other day or so for Zoom meetings, and sometimes use them to watch Netflix or something.
Very lightweight on the head, wired or wireless. They have 8 or so mics on them for great voice quality. ANC is very nice.
As well they support LDAC codec so you get fantastic sound quality. You do need to go in to your device and set it to LDAC, it comes set to the basic SBC so it will work with everything that doesn't support higher-end sound quality. Once you turn it on, you can easily hear the difference.
Of note, Apple products do not support many codecs, just the basic ones so you can take advantage of that, but still highly recommend even without that.
LDAC- is a high-resolution Bluetooth audio codec developed by Sony that transmits approximately three times more data than standard Bluetooth codecs like SBC. It supports audio quality up to 32-bit/96 kHz with a maximum bitrate of 990 kbps, making it a leading choice for Hi-Res Audio Wireless certification on Android devices (native since Android 8.0

Sony's WH1000XM5 at this Costco price stands out as a lightweight, very comfortable noise cancelling headphone with strong sound, especially after EQ tweaks, and excellent battery life for flights, Zoom calls, and daily use. The Costco SA bundle includes a soft case or cloth bag rather than the hard case sold elsewhere, and the app can help confirm warehouse stock when signage is stale. The main concern is durability, especially the hinge, with repeated reports of breakage and a few workarounds like reinforcement kits. It is a strong value if portability and ANC matter more than ruggedness.
Common Questions (5)
The hinge is a recurring weak point, and some units have broken after months of use or even inside the unopened package. Others report years of daily use without issues, so careful handling and a hinge reinforcement kit are common ways to reduce the risk.
Compared with the Bose 700, the XM5 is often described as a lateral move or a worthwhile upgrade depending on what you value; the Bose 700 is also praised for stronger build quality. Compared with the XM4, the XM5 is reported to have better ANC, clearer sound, and a wider soundstage, though some prefer the XM4 for reliability and foldability.
Use the Costco app's Warehouse feature to check local stock, because shelf signage may lag behind the actual in-warehouse price. If the item shows in stock but is not on the sales floor, a cashier can ring up the item number and staff may pull it from the stock room.
The Costco WH1000XM5/SA version comes with a soft cloth case, not the hard carrying case included with some other retailers' versions. The main difference from the standard model is the case, which also makes the Costco package more portable but less protective.
No, the XM5 does not fold like earlier Sony XM models. That makes the included soft case less convenient if you need compact storage in a full carry-on.
