We recently caught up with longtime Slickdeals community member and Deal Hunter, Serra, to get their top tips for saving on travel. A Slickdealer since 2004, Serra has helped tens of thousands of members score great deals over the years and has more than 1,000 Frontpage deals to her name.
Question: Travel deals feel fundamentally different from buying a physical product, as there's so much timing, flexibility, and personal circumstance involved. In your opinion, what makes a travel deal genuinely good, versus just cheap?
Serra: A good travel deal is ultimately based on personal needs and how much value it holds for you. Whether it's somewhere you need to be, a destination on your bucket list, or just somewhere you've always wanted to visit, the "cheap" part is a bonus, because who wouldn't want to save money? For finding cheaper travel, flexibility is the key. Airlines, hotels, and attractions will have lower rates to fill up their seats, rooms and capacity. Naturally, the other sectors such as car rentals, airport parking etc., follow the same trends. So you can find travel that's both good and cheap if you're willing to be flexible. As I'd put it: someone asks "did you have a good trip?" and I say "YES! It was amazing, and I got a great deal too!" Travel can be both at the same time.
Question: Are there any overarching trends for where the best travel deals tend to pop up these days? Have these trends shifted at all in recent years?
Serra: I try my best to bring good travel deals to the site, and I always keep in mind what's trending during any given travel period. Around the Super Bowl, I'll post Las Vegas deals. During the World Cup, more Los Angeles deals, including surrounding attractions like Disneyland, SeaWorld, and Universal Studios. I'll also post deals around snowbirds heading south for the winter or summer vacation deals for families with kids. The timing of what's relevant shapes what I'm looking for and posting at any given time.
