Question:What's the most jaw-dropping travel deal you've ever seen posted on Slickdeals, the one where the community collectively lost its mind?
Serra: There's one deal people still bring up years later: a fare mistake on Singapore Airlines business class that was actually honored. I posted that one, though I didn't book it myself so I don't remember all the details. Beyond that, when ZIPAIR first launched, their airfares to Japan were jaw-dropping and honestly still one of the best ways to get there affordably. On a personal note, this might sound a little crazy, but I spontaneously flew to Japan for four days because I couldn't pass up a deal I had just posted. After stacking an Amex Offer, my nonstop round-trip airfare came to about $385. Another standout was a nonstop Alaska Airlines first-class fare to Oahu at $550 round trip. I stacked several promotions and brought it down to just under $500 per ticket. Anyone can do the same because I always call out current promotions and merchant offers in my posts to make it easy.

Question: Going back to your spontaneous Japan trip, were you able to get a good hotel deal as well, or did that matter less given how cheap the flights were?
Serra: For the hotel, I went to Expedia because there was a coupon code, browsed through the options, found one I was comfortable with, and then cross-checked that same hotel and dates on other OTAs to confirm the price. I don't mind using OTAs for hotels. They're pretty straightforward, and you're not going to run into the same risks you might with airlines, like cancellations or delays. I just found the lowest price in a location I was happy with and booked it.

Question: Do you remember roughly what the all-in cost was for flights and hotel?
Serra: It was almost two years ago, so I don't remember exactly, but it was February, which is off-peak and pretty cold and rainy in Japan, so the hotel was on the lower end. The flights were so cheap, under $400 per person, that we honestly weren't too focused on the rest. My husband and I had been to Japan before but couldn't pass up the deal. We packed carry-ons, I paid about $35 for a checked bag on the way home for souvenirs, and we just went to shop, eat, and walk around.
