I have a 48v 5thwheel and wasn't expecting much but was surprised. It's held up well. Also on mine, there was some controller programming option that when changed from 0 to 1, unlocked the speed limiter from 20mph to 28mph.

I bought one of these for my high school daughter for Christmas, even this 36v one works fine. It's not the fastest on acceleration, it doesn't have a really good range. But it works great for a school commuter.

True. 10ah battery on mine. But, at least with mine, it uses a standard halong battery so easy to get another. I actually emailed 5th wheel if they sell them direct and they sent me one for free.

Looking at the review submitted pics, it has a throttle.

Honestly it's great fun for me a 45 year old, 5'8, 180 lbs man to ride too. Even though I have 4 other electric bikes this one gets used because it's a nice light rider. With the standard tires it rides nice and nimble.

I see these bikes on SD and feel silly for buying an American brand ebike which has basically the same specs but was like $1600 and wonder why I paid 6x more, what am I really getting?

Seems like an incredible deal.

It is really nice to see disc brakes on these bottom end 36v ebikes now, even if they are mechanical vs hydraulic.
My first ebike was a Hyper 36v mountain bike pretty similar to this, and it really could have used disc brakes!

Often the American (fronted at least) companies have slightly better Q/A and warranty support, sometimes they are sourcing higher quality cells.
I bought an Ariel Rider grizzly in 2021 for $3k.I see better bikes from china for less than half of that now.
To some degree i think we also paid an early adopters premium.

It's a double edged sword. The pros for premium US brands are local bike shops are usually willing to work on the premium brands, usually better support, potentially better quality parts, UL listed battery. The cons are of course the exponentially higher cost, usually proprietary expensive parts vs commodity replacement parts, and an recent trend is many of the premium brands are going out of business due to the availability of these cheaper ones.
If you're willing to roll up your sleeves and work on your bike or know your local bike shop will work on these types of bikes I think they are a great value. I bought a conversion kit for my first and got a 5th wheel for my second. Very happy with both and glad I built mine as it taught me the ins and outs of basic repair and maintenance.
