The Sundara is an open back planar headphone that stands out for detail, soundstage, and strong value at this price. It sounds neutral to slightly bright, with good bass that is not aimed at bassheads, and it takes equalization very well. Power helps a lot, so an amp or balanced output brings out more of what it can do. The main cautions are a tight fit, a somewhat fragile headband design, and questions about AliExpress authenticity or version differences. A strong pick for listeners who want revealing planar sound and can drive it properly.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. It can sound good without one, but it is fairly power-hungry and opens up more with a proper amp or balanced output. With enough clean power, detail, dynamics, and overall value improve noticeably.

  • No. The Sundara is more mid/treble-forward and neutral than bass-heavy, so it does not emphasize heavy punch and slam. It still produces good bass, and EQ can add more low-end if needed.

  • The pair reported by buyers is genuine, and the listing is described as the 2020 or later version. The only noted revision difference is slightly thinner pads on the 2020+ model.

  • It can play from portable gear, but volume may be limited and a balanced cable can help unlock more output from a capable dongle or amp. One setup needed 92% volume on 3.5mm versus 65% on 4.4mm balanced for the same loudness.

  • Yes. It responds very well to EQ and can be tuned toward different preferences, including taming brightness or adding bass. That flexibility is a major reason it is considered strong value at this price.

Anyone concerned that these may not be "real" Sundaras? AE prices on HiFiMan seem too good to be true.
I got these at $110 cuz I thought that was a banger deal. Mine came in perfect I would definitely recommend trying it as these headphones are great!

Worked for me, thanks OP.

For those with address issues, make sure your address is correct in AE. I buy all my Hall Effect and TMR stick replacements from AE and I did have issues when I first started. I removed and added my address back to my profile and it worked.

I also only use PayPal for checkout.

sundaras aren't generally for bassheads - they are more mid-high forward. that's not to say that they don't do good bass, they just don't go out of their way to do heavy punch and slam, tend to be more neutral than anything. I personally really enjoy them (they are my favorite headphone i've tried and i'm wearing them right now), but they aren't super bass heavy.
Thanks for the feedback. I also have a pair of 400i that are rarely used since the bass department is lacking unless low frequencies are EQ'd. I find myself gravitating for the Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee more often since they're more "fun" and lively.

I have a HD6XX, K7XX, K702 and some other IEMs. These are indeed worth the price driven by an amp. They sound great while having different sound profiles from Senn. AKG. I like em. They have a good sound stage which I miss when I use the HD6XX. But the K7XX/K702s lack some the of depth. The Sundaras strike a middle ground well, leaning more bright and punchier and EQ nicely to temper those out as well.

Hifiman planars like these don't always sound great out of the box but they take EQ extremely well. If you have a good DSP, they can sound like just about anything. I've been very impressed running mine off a Qudelix DSP / amp with careful parametric equalization, though I had to swap the stock cables for balanced cables to take advantage of the full power potential of the amp.

Speaking of power, these are fairly power hungry, but don't confuse power with quality. A high quality amp that is just barely powerful enough to reach your preferred volume (with a little headroom) will sound better than a crappy amp that's 10x more powerful. My amp is a good illustration: even though it doesn't get loud enough using unbalanced cables (because it can't push as much power in that configuration), it sounds just as good. Just not loud enough for quieter mixes.

So don't blow your budget chasing more power than you need—raw power is not what makes headphones (even power-hungry headphones) sound good. It's just what makes them loud. If it's loud enough and still doesn't sound good, you have another problem (bad quality headphones, needs EQ, bad quality amp, etc).

Are there even fakes of these? Planar drivers aren't that easy to knock-off because you still need to implement a planar driver, it would be very obvious by sight if it wasn't a planar driver. At these rock-bottom prices from Hifiman and some of Fiio's offerings I think it would be very difficult to make a knock-off planar headphone and beat them on price.

Anybody know if these are the 2020 version? Just wondering if maybe they're trying to offload pre-2020 versions at a steep discount since the reviews I've seen said basically the 2020 version is all around better... It looks like AE does have another Sundara listing that's like ~$34 more, so makes me wonder if it's pre-2020 vs 2020 version...
