I grew up on the original. This series has always held a special place for me. I've enjoyed the three that I've played, but the first is still definitely my favorite.

This is one of those series I just never got into. What separates it from others?

It's a 1st person RPG where "your choices matter". Exploration is a big part, and you will be rewarded with information and supplies/equipment. The level designs make it interesting to explore as well.

Usually, there's 1 or 2 choices that have a big impact and many small choices that have have a localized impact on the current mission/side quest.

You can choose to go in guns blazing or pure stealth. In the original game, you get stupidly over powered where your healing and armor power-ups make you impossible to kill (until you run out of energy).

The stories are interesting where you usually uncover conspiracies while traveling to a variety of locations. I prefer the story of the 1st game, but that may just be rose colored glasses. I will say that I didn't enjoy the ending of any of the games too much. It's essentially: "choose your cutscene".
