Am I reading it correctly that it added some USB-A ports, but reduced the number of USB-C ports, which isn't ideal?

Not if you want to plug in camera, hard drive(s), sd cards, mouse, keyboard, etc..

Yeah I noticed that too. 2 USB-A is plenty for older stuff, but to lose a USB-C seems weird.
Edit: This one just uses the 1 USB-C port, and is cheaper (no display port):
