Is this a frequent sale price? Anyone know how long it lasts? It's a ways away for me.

(for that Brenton area linked there is an open box for $150)

Yes, normal sale price for around 6 months, up to about $240. Better to consider the $350 bundle and sell the 16 GB, and board for around $100-120 each, if you don't need them.

Pretty sure that's an error where a cashier keyed a return incorrectly. I don't think MC does open box CPUs, I heard all CPU returns are sent back to manufacturer for RMA.
Happened to me a while back for a 12600k I bought "open box" and they ended up giving me a brand new one instead.

My current processor came from them open box and super cheap. The processor had a little thermal compound residue that hadn't gotten fully cleaned off. The included heatsink had the pre applied compound wiped off, and there was a tube of thermal compound added to the box. Worked perfectly though, and I upgraded from a 2600 to a 5600x for $60.

thoughts on this for a 4K/120hz TV build? assuming upscaling / frame gen, maybe from a 5070Ti

Of course, this is a MC exclusive 😅. Hopefully, that won't be the same outcome for the 7700X3D...

not worth building anything now. they might as well give their CPU's away for free.

Depends. Are you trying to build a performance rig since it's for the TV? At that resolution you'd get more bang for your buck going for a non x3D CPU. You're not getting the value of the extra cache at that size because your GPU becomes the bottleneck. The benefits from x3D was bringing down frame times to catch up with GPUs but they equalize the higher up in res you go. You might even get lucky trying to buy a pre built pull from used market off people swapping to x3D chips

I haven't looked much into why x3D is good for gaming, but at 200$ for a 7600x3D that seems worthwhile? and makes a better pairing for gaming in general, no?

To answer your question, I think it's a general goal of "I have a 4K TV so I want whatever's on there to look good, and I hate playing action games at 60fps". The most power intensive games I play would be things like Anno 1800, God of War, other major single player titles mixed with a lot of niche indie games.

I'm going off of memory but other than gaming I don't remember the 7600x3D really standing out anywhere. I remember originally planning on getting that until I realized how little 3D cache provided for me and was looking at the 7900 for more cores. The 7800x3d is readily available on eBay for $300. I would imagine you could probably find the 7800x or better variants for around the price of this chip (I tried to search 7800x non 3d but eBay kept showing me the x3D variants)

The chip is fine, but just know you're paying for the x3D portion and not getting value out of it. That point alone makes me lean towards waiting for a sale on the regular version if you're set on this tier or wait for a deal on a higher tier non 3D cache.

Anecdotally about X3D: Last year, due to BF6 and all the stuttering I was seeing with my 4080 Super, I went from a 5900X to a 5700X3D on my old PC and it massively improved the frame pacing and removed the stutter I was seeing in modern games. That cache matters. 1440P Ultrawide too, so the gpu was the chokepoint.

You can point to benchmarks as much as you want, but sometimes you just gotta FEEL it.
