Are they really that bad like most people are saying after they got bought up?

A couple of weeks ago, I was at Costco, and this unit was on display. It appeared to be a little flimsy and didn't feel as solid as the older Webers. I am not sure if it worth the asking price.

We bought my mother in law a genesis in 2015 and then a Monument with an infrared side burner last summer when she moved. The Monument blows away the Genesis in every possible way. And it was half the price.

I own a weber genesis and the customer support is outstanding. Also the design and cooking capability is outstanding. That said, they have steadily cost reduced by cheapening the external structure while keeping the key components (burners) the same quality. If I had a recommendation, I would buy an older genesis and clean it up for the higher quality parts. I did that since I had to take it apart to rodent proof it. The last rodent proof model was over 10+ years ago and I did not want to buy one out of warranty. Lets see if the Monument lasts for 5 years. The prior gas grill I got looked beautiful, externals was stainless and after 3 years, the burners dissolved. Cooking was mediocre. So I got a Weber. Very happy with the weber.

Looked up a few reviews on Reddit, and tbh coming from a standard charcoal grill, this grill is Amazing. Night and day difference. Also if it's as bad quality as some people say, Costco will accept the return whenever so there's a plus in that.

Older weber? Great product, stellar service.

Newer weber? Not a f*cking chance it's worth what they're asking. And the support is reportedly eroding as well. Weber was bought by private equity, so if history is any indicator, they'll load the company with debt, reduce quality to absolute bare minimums, destroy the customer support and make warranty claims nearly impossible, then bankrupt the company until it's bought by a competitor for pennies.

So,yeah...buy an old weber and refurb it. The new ones ain't worth spit.

And yes, Costco will take anything back. But consider the logistics of returning a used, assembled grill to a warehouse. Absolute pain in the balls. So make sure you're up that task when you take a flyer on a new Weber.

Which model did she get? How about projected longevity?

We could've stopped at "bought by PE." Once that happens, I'm out.

Look into Napoleon grills. Reportedly everything old weber used to be. Including the sky high prices. But this is definitely a "buy once, cry once" situation. Especially if you use it every few days, pretty much all year long, like we do here.

If you can wait a bit until after the summer grilling season, you may be able to find some clearance steals at Lowe's on Weber grills. Got a Genesis S-415 last year for about $850.
