Nice... I'm pretty sure the inventory from the official Nintendo website sold out in minutes so this might be a good time to grab one if you wanted one.

Do people buy these as investments only? What is the appreciation like over time?

People buy these for whatever reasons they might have. I personally love physical games and if I really like or am interested in the game, I might want the collector edition. Just for my own desires. Not as often as I used to when I was younger, but sometimes still.

Often times the value can climb significantly especially if it remains sealed, but I can't really find it in me to part with my stuff. Fire Emblem Three Houses for example seems to fetch into the 300s new for the CE presently. Some games end up worth more than others.

Sadly many do siphon a lot of these up to sell, constricting supply and therefore increasing price inherently for those that actually just want to own it for personal reasons.

The Fire Emblem Fates special edition that I got for $100 many years ago is now over $500 on ebay.

But no, I'm getting this just because I love Fire Emblem. The main reason why I bought a switch 2.

People who buy these as long-term investments tend to not understand how stock index funds work. S&P 500 returns outpace many of these collector's editions.

Even as a lifelong Fire Emblem fan (I feel like I get to say "lifelong" given that I bought the first US-released Fire Emblem for the GBA in 2003), I'm not sure I'd plop $120 for a collector's edition. The last few FE's have been iffy. Three Houses was popular but didn't feel like a Fire Emblem game anymore, Engage was more back-to-basics but rather mediocre. And best not to speak of that recent mobile game.

I guess the fact that you're gonna pay $80 just for a regular physical edition when it comes out might make the $120 seem like less of a splurge.

It had skipped my mind to check Amazon for this version of FE. Combined this with the Discover offer of ten bucks off over 75. Thanks!

Sounds like we're in the same camp. Can you tell if the new one is going to be so heavily relationship management/side quest driven again? I haven't been able to tell from the trailers but have been underwhelmed by the FE switch releases and was considering skipping this on release. I doubt it would happen, but would be all in on a FE that returns more to the pre-Three Houses format but keeps QoL stuff.

I'm currently standing in a second-hand hobby store. They're selling a lightly damaged boxed copy of Fire Emblem Fates Special Edition for $500+tax.

I get what you are trying to say, but remember: the top 1% own literally half of all the stock markets value. IIRC like 5% of the stock market is owned by less than a dozen individuals.

A lot of what's available to buy loses value, or at best gains much more slowly. And thats saying nothing about the fears of market collapses and the AI bubble.

I never buy these as an investment because its moronic and I cant stand the scalpers that do it. I am just saying I understand why someone would choose this over stocks.

I have always wondered: who out there even remotely cares about "art cards" or even the map? I love art books but every one I have gotten from a CE has been a pale shadow to dedicated art books you can get for under a third of the price on Amazon.
A CE with the art book and a steel book for $10 or even $15 more would be great, but double the price is a joke.
Then again $80 for an SRPG is a joke unto itself. Graphics and some crappy mini games aside, these games can largely be built in SRPG studio on Steam. I acknowledge more talent goes into FE and whatnot but $40ish should really be the ceiling.
At $80 it better be twice the size of 3 Houses.
