Lenovo's ThinkPad P16 Gen 3 is a mobile workstation built for heavy creator and engineering work, with a 24GB RTX PRO 5000, 192GB of RAM, 4TB of storage, and workstation software certification. The huge memory pool, four SODIMM slots, and Thunderbolt support make it stand out for video editing, VFX, local AI, and other on the go pro workflows. The main tradeoffs are the very high price after tax, the pen sold separately, and some spec choices that feel dated for the money, including DDR5 5600, a 120Hz 3.2K screen, and only one PCIe 5.0 NVMe slot. It reads like a niche powerhouse for specialized mobile work.

  • The RTX PRO 5000 configuration can support demanding creator workflows that need mobile top-end GPU power.

  • The laptop offers substantial system memory expandability with four SODIMM slots for high-RAM workloads.

  • The extended warranty can be important for after-sale coverage on a high-end workstation-class laptop.

  • The machine can enable local AI use cases where keeping questions private matters.

  • The total cost can rise above expectations after tax and the pen may need separate purchase.

  • The configuration may feel constrained for AI expectations because 24GB VRAM may only fit smaller models.

  • The system may be limited by memory and storage configuration choices such as DDR5-5600 speed and only one PCIe 5.0 NVMe slot.

  • The dedicated GPU may not be fully usable at the stated high resolution, which can lead to very low performance.

If you're in the market for something like this, don't ignore the extended warranty. That'll be like buying a commercial or industrial machine and forgetting the after-sale contract...
For real, I've had to cash in on the extended warranty just once, but for something like this monster machine, that one incident makes the extra couple hundred bucks worthwhile.

Ya but those people aren't shopping around for these on their personal dime, their companies already provide these caliber machines to them
But us IT managers are always looking for sales!

(This is way beyond our usage needs, but love seeing it)

these assets sure have appreciated though over the last 2 years maybe that will continue
a few points:

1. LP memory (your 8000 MT memory) is non removable. LPCAMM only supports up to 96GB
  1. You are right that there is 1 NVMe 5.0 slot, but 2 4.0 slots
  2. Screen is OLED, with a VRR that allows 1 Hz or 120. I've yet to see a 4k OLED screen with VRR.
  3. This is an HX CPU - and has a lot more thermal headroom (55 watt TDP) as opposed to a regular PC with 15w TDP
  4. AMD's offerings do NOT blow it out of the water.
  5. P core only has more speed than E cores. As you noted, they are 1 thread per core.
  6. 300 series is rolling out, but HX processors come only every other year.
  7. This PC is certified to run a lot of ISV software - Autocad, Photoshop - this is a full blown workstation
  8. Here are the processor specs: https://www.intel.com/content/www...tions.html
  9. This has top of the line (for notebooks) graphics card - RTX 5000 has 24GB of VRAM.

I do work for Lenovo - and know a little about these machines. Trust me, this is a great price. (I do not share employee pricing on Slickdeals)

Crazy. I built my desktop with 256 GB EGG memory (ungradable to 512 GB) with options of 25 SSDs (I have only 8 with 3 HDDs) and 25 monitors (I have only ~10 monitors - wife's restriction! on 6 graphic cards) all together for less than 1k!
How? Please educate us we may follow your footsteps

I never cease to get a little chuckle every time someone says that nobody buys the kinds of machines I buy.

These are definitely niche products, but those of us working in those niches have uses for these seemingly wacky computers. I'm actually chilling in the woods with one of my monster laptops and a battery bank, enjoying the freedom from a desk in an office while running both local training and local inference on some serious AI/ML models.

Believe it or not, this isn't even the wackiest "mobile server" laptop in production today. Check out the water-cooled Tongfang designs, or the most expensive HIDEvolution models. Being able to load models with 30B+ parameters and offload MoE experts into the massive amount of system RAM means that I can have advanced AI/ML capabilities without paying for tokens from a subscription service, and without an Internet connection, plus total control over the models.
You run too much AI/ML, in the future you'll be a human slave stuck in the office while Claude and Grok is having a beer and go fishing.

I have never seen a laptop this is expensive before. What makes it so pricey? Some of the specs look crazy.
You could literally edit and color grade a Hollywood-quality film in 4K on a airplane flight with this thing. It is a big cut above anything else.

It's got 4 SODIMM slots. If this thing goes on clearance for, say, $2000 - I'd be strongly tempted to buy it.

Anyone want to guess how much runtime it'll get with its 99WHr battery?
Probably 2 hrs max if you're editing 4k video or rendering 3D.

In for 2, the vacation for 5 can wait next year. I bet my son will still complain that his Minecraft is laggy with this laptop.
